REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Canam Commercial Collaboration, integrity, quality, flexibility and innovation are the characteristics that distinguish Canam Commercial as a leading construction company. With over 70 years’ experience in construction, Canam understands the process and the industry – and it has the confidence to undertake the most challenging and technically complex projects. Specialising in the construction of commercial and residential buildings throughout the North Island, with offices in Whangarei, Auckland and the Bay of Plenty, Canam Commercial is proud to have delivered some iconic projects throughout Northland. “Canam Commercial takes pride in contributing to community projects such as the recent Lindvart Multi-Sport Complex, Tikipunga Football Club, Kamo High School Re-Development, Marohapa Housing, and Lovers Lane Bridge Projects, to name a few,” Canam commercial director, Stephen Jones says. “These community projects allow Canam to build lasting relationships and use its skills to make a positive impact where it matters most.” One project Canam is particularly proud to have been part of is Te Iwitahi, Whangarei’s Civic Centre for Whangarei District Council (WDC). This was one of the biggest builds in the region, and delivered on a 30 year-dream, held by successive Whangārei councils, to build a new, one-stop-shop to house all staff in one venue. Canam worked closely with WDC, The Building Intelligence Group, and TEAM Architects to complete the project, which not only delivered a new, fit-for-purpose building for WDC, but also achieved numerous broader outcomes for the local district. The project was recognised by the Construction Accord for its innovative, community-focused procurement processes, with the Civic Centre being named as a Beacon Project. “Beacon Projects highlight examples of good practice in the construction sector that others can learn from and adopt, and it was great for the project to achieve this recognition for the broader outcomes that WDC wanted to achieve,” Stephen says. The project also went on to win Supreme, Value, Best in Category and Gold at the 2024 NZ Master Builders Commercial Awards, along with the Northland Civic Architecture Award and Merit Award at the 2024 Property Council Awards. The judges commented: “Positioned at a key intersection in Whangarei, it is a central hub for the community and local government activities. The architecture of the building extends an open invitation to all, through the bold colours and elements. The innovative model of procurement allowed for exceptional collaboration within the team to develop a special, joyful and highly functional facility. It has been built with passion and purpose to provide a great asset and enduring legacy to the Northland community.” “We’re extremely proud of this project and its achievements,” Stephen says. “We hope that our success demonstrates that when you have the right team for the right project, a robust project governance structure and shared common goals, great things can be achieved.” Canam has recently moved to new offices at 138 Bank Street, Whangarei, and warmly welcomes anyone to drop in for a coffee and a chat.
