Water treatment specialists Temple Water Technologies Ltd has successfully designed, installed and commissioned a sophisticated water treatment plant for Waitoa Natural Proteins in the Waitoa Industrial Estate in Tatuanui. The company was selected to supply the comprehensive treatment system for the site, which includes three distinct types of treated water to function e ectively. Ezra Joel, Temple Water Technologies’ chemical process engineer, says the project presented signi cant technical challenges due to the bore water's unique chemistry. "The high silica concentration of 101 parts per million posed the primary challenge, as it would precipitate and scale pipelines and instruments when used as hot water at temperatures of 40 degrees and above in the Waitoa Natural Proteins rendering plant. Iron and manganese were also present but proved easier to remove using Temple Water’s advanced treatment method," he says. Temple Water Technologies' solution involved creating a system to produce three types of water: potable water, demineralised water and a specially blended water that combines the rst two to produce a potable water with a reduced silica level below 25 parts per million to avoid scaling in the hot water applications in the process plant equipment. The company worked closely with Rendertech, who designed the rendering process and hardware, to ensure the water treatment system would integrate seamlessly with the industrial operations. The treatment system capacity was designed to provide 2,100 cubic metres per day necessitating substantial storage infrastructure including three one-million-litre tanks - one for each type of treated water. Temple Water designed the entire water treatment plant including the bore head works to the bulk storage tanks and wastewater neutralisation and disposal into the on-site wastewater ponds. It worked with its associates specialising in stainless steel fabrication and piping streamlining the installation using Europress 316 SS. Ezra says there were three important factors in Temple Water Technologies’ selection for the project. Firstly its ability to minimise wastewater production - a key e ciency and environmental requirement for the industrial estate. The demineralised water system produces just 2% wastewater compared to 25% wastewater from an alternative process. The potable water system generates only 1.8% waste, compared to 14% from conventional iron and manganese removal treatment, gures that were veri ed during testing and commissioning phases. Another factor was Temple Water Technologies’ innovation in treatment technologies, dosing systems, PLC and process control. The system's sophisticated automation includes remote monitoring capabilities allowing Temple Water Technologies to identify and resolve issues before they impact operations. This proactive approach ensures consistent performance and minimises downtime. The third factor was the design that produced a small footprint allowing to t the treatment hardware into the boiler house thereby not requiring an extra building, a signi cant capital saving. "At Temple Water Technologies we focus on delivering systems that are e cient and ensure low ongoing operating costs." Currently operating at approximately 900 cubic metres per day in stage one, the plant has been running successfully since December last year. The total system capacity provides substantial room for future expansion as the industrial estate develops. Ezra says the Waitoa Industrial Estate project exempli es Temple Water Technologies’ approach of delivering systems tailored to speci c water chemistry challenges. With over 30 years of experience across New Zealand the company has developed seven bore water and ve surface water treatment technologies. Founded by quali ed NZCS chemist Chris Temple, the company guarantees its treated water will meet agreed standards as veri ed by independent laboratory testing, o ering to add equipment or replace systems free of charge if standards aren't achieved. Ezra thinks the successful delivery of the complex Waitoa Industrial Estate project reinforces Temple Water Technologies’ position as market leaders in water ltration and treatment solutions, particularly for challenging applications requiring multiple treatment processes and stringent quality standards. "This project shows we can liaise with multiple contractors to successfully deliver a large scale complex project."
