Following on from their success in winning Excellence in Community Contribution for South and East Auckland at the 2024 2degrees Auckland Business Awards, the Beautification Trust recently claimed top spot in the same category at the awards’ Best of the Best ceremony. The event celebrates the very best of business in the Auckland region, recognising hard work, dedication and innovation. Operating as a social enterprise, the Beautification Trust’s mission is to connect and empower communities to learn, love and look after their environment. Since 2001, it has been leading beautification projects, community events, zero waste programmes and environmental education throughout South and East Auckland. Trust CEO Daniel Barthow says the accolade showcases a positive story coming out of South Auckland, and highlights what can be achieved when people work together towards achieving a collective vision. “It’s really special for us to have this recognition for our team and our volunteers, and the amazing partners we work with,” he says. “It is an honour for us to serve our local community and environment through working in partnership and having such a great team of volunteers and staff, who are able to do that hard work, day in and day out.” The trust endeavours to operate in as accessible a way as possible, with community events and activities run under its auspices offered for free, or at a low cost. “We try and make it fun for the community by supporting change for good in a positive way,” Daniel says. Serving as a central hub for the trust’s Zero Waste Programme for South Aucklanders is the Manurewa Community Recycling Centre. Projects like repair cafes, a reuse store and a Boomer Shed have been developed hand in hand with the community to further reduce waste. The community workshop, Boomer Shed, recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. “It has made a long-standing impact across the past 10 years. Recently, an incredible project involved volunteers handcrafting a stunning seven-and-a-half-metre-wide sensory mural for the Blind and Low Vision Education Network NZ.” Daniel says another exciting achievement for the trust has been the recent addition of Auckland’s Bike Hub in Manurewa. Operated by the Beautification Trust, with support from Auckland Transport, the hub is helping to break down barriers to cycling in the area. It provides bike repair and maintenance workshops, and also sells refurbished donated bikes. “There was a real need for this in Manurewa. It has had a lot of support from the community with large numbers of people going through when it’s open, (Thursday to Saturday 10am to 4pm, at 1 Dalgety Drive). Often, young people can be found there learning bike mechanical skills.” Another significant milestone, starting this July, sees the Beautification Trust and the Tread Lightly Charitable Trust (TLCT) joining forces to strengthen environmental learning and behaviour change initiatives across Tāmaki Makaurau. “We’re super excited about the possibilities ahead with the Tread Lightly programme, and being able to share sustainability messages in engaging new ways,” Daniel says.
