86 | Not just wiring homes The team works closely with a select group of builders installing complex electrical systems Tauranga Electrical T T Sue Russell “We’re not just wiring houses anymore – we’re creating ambience, personality, and control.” CONTRACTING When John Box looks back on the past 30 years of Tauranga Electrical, two things come to mind: a great team and loyal clients. “It’s the people who have made it possible – both those we work with and those we work for,” John says. “We are lucky to have long-standing clients, who value quality. They trust us to get the job done – no fuss – and we really appreciate that.” Tauranga Electrical’s story started in a humble garden shed in Pyes Pa, where John ran the business solo. Around the same time, he and his partner Lyn were starting their own family. It was a busy chapter of their lives. With steady growth, the business expanded its focus across Tauranga, Mount Maunganui, Papamoa and the Western Bay of Plenty. Largely taking on residential work, but not limited to that, the business also carried out farm maintenance, commercial shop fit-outs – basically anything that came through the door. From the original garden shed, the business moved into a slightly larger shed still on the home property – though during winter, it was often warmer outside than it was inside! In 2017, the team finally moved into their own commercial unit, giving them room to grow, take on apprentices, and expand into higher-end and architectural projects. The team works closely with a select group of builders – including one who specialises in high-end homes - with complex electrical systems. With Todd Grey Builders, Tauranga Electrical has been proud to be part of several award-winning, Registered Master Builders House of the Year projects. Lighting, John says, has become a whole new world. Tauranga Electrical delivers bespoke architectural lighting designs in partnership with LivLight Tauranga. This includes smart, computer-controlled systems that let homeowners change the colour and mood of their lighting from a single switch. “We’re not just wiring houses anymore – we’re creating ambience, personality, and control,” John says. A key figure in the company’s continued growth has been Dean Giles, who brought with him a wealth of knowledge and experience when he joined the team. His leadership and technical expertise have been invaluable – not only on-site, but also in helping to guide apprentices and support the direction of the business. Dean plays a major role in managing the day-to-day operations, and is well respected by the team and clients alike. While John now spends most of his time in the office (after finally getting “off the tools” at 50 – a decade behind his plan), his passion remains in mentoring. He is a big believer in giving apprentices as much experience as possible, and instilling strong work habits early on. “The deal is simple – we’ll support you through your apprenticeship, and in return, you give us one year once you’re qualified. It’s a gentleman’s handshake. We train you to be a good sparky – and hopefully a good human, too.” Tauranga Electrical is truly a family business. Daughter Grace now works alongside John and Lyn, bringing a fresh eye to the business’s marketing and social media presence. “Grace has been instrumental in helping modernise the way we communicate,” says John. “She’s helped share our story with the community, and has brought great energy into the business.” The family legacy doesn’t stop there. Grace’s younger brother, Thomas, has followed in his father’s footsteps and become a qualified electrician. As for Lyn, John says she’s been the quiet force behind the company’s success from day one. “There’s no way we’d be where we are now without her. “She’s supported me and this business through thick and thin, and I’m incredibly thankful,” he says. After 30 years, Tauranga Electrical remains grounded in the same values it was built on: quality work, strong relationships, and a team that feels like family.
