The greatest feeling is the recognition amongst my peers for being in tune with the industry and the work it does.” After more than 40 years in the trade, Darrin Minifie, the commercial manager at Auckland’s DL Good Plumbers, has been named Plumber/Gasfitter/Drainlayer of the Year at the 2025 New Zealand Master Plumbers Awards, held in Brisbane. The award recognises an exceptional contribution to the industry through leadership, technical ability, and commitment to best practice. Darrin was acknowledged for his excellence in managing large-scale projects, training staff, and ensuring regulatory compliance in one of New Zealand’s busiest commercial plumbing firms. “It’s certainly a feather in my cap after a career in plumbing, specialising in commercial work the majority of the time,” Darrin says. “The greatest feeling is the recognition amongst my peers for being in tune with the industry and the work it does.” Darrin’s journey began in 1981 with Auckland-based plumbing supply company D Henry and Co. Initially working behind the counter, he soon found himself drawn to the hands-on side of the trade, and inspired by the plumbers he interacted with he completed an apprenticeship with commercial plumbing firm WA Chenery. After qualifying in 1985, Darrin remained with that company until the 1987–88 financial crisis reshaped the industry. Adapting to the changing market, he moved into residential work with Plumb Corp, but by the early 1990s, he had returned to commercial plumbing, co-founding Project Plumbing with his wife Nicky, who served as the company’s business manager, along with fellow former Chenery employee, Paul Abbott. Project Plumbing grew quickly, employing 14 staff and handling contracts for major clients, but found itself working predominately for DL Good Plumbers, a long-standing Auckland firm with a rich family history. Founded in the 1950s by the late Don Good, DL Good Plumbers is part of the Good Bros Group, playing a key role in high-profile construction projects across the North Island. Don’s son Dave had rejoined the family business in 2015 after a successful career in finance, and had proposed a merger, recognising Darrin’s depth of experience and leadership potential. Dave, already a chartered accountant and treasurer, completed certification as a drainlayer, bringing both financial acumen and hands-on trade expertise to the business. The merger coincided with Dave taking over as general manager in 2020. In 2022, Darrin faced a year of upheaval, as he focused on supporting his wife Nicky, whose cancer had returned. Don’s passing in early 2022 was followed by Nicky’s later the same year, but the support Darrin and Dave provided to each other during this time galvanised into a stronger working partnership, leading to growth. DL Good Plumbers employs over 80 staff, with Darrin leading its commercial operations and mentoring up-and-coming tradespeople. His award is not just a personal milestone, but a reflection of a lifetime dedicated to craftsmanship, resilience, and evolving with the industry. “I’ve seen the industry change dramatically over the decades, but one thing that’s remained constant is the importance of doing things properly – and passing that on to the next generation,” Darrin says. His story stands as a testament to the enduring value of skill, adaptability, and leadership in the trades.
