The new, small-format store, spanning more than 4300sqm, opened its doors to customers on June 17, providing a strategic location on Cameron Road, Tauranga’s primary connection between the city centre and southern suburbs. It features an outdoor nursery and parking for more than 80 cars. “We are so excited to be able to offer another Bunnings store for our Tauranga community, making it easier to get what they need from both sides of the bridge,” says Bunnings Tauranga complex manager, Tammy Fielding. “Whether you’re a tradie picking up supplies, homeowner tackling renovations, renter or a DIY enthusiast seeking inspiration, we’re confident the new store has something for everyone.” The store represents the third Bunnings location in the wider Tauranga area, joining the existing large warehouse store in Mount Maunganui, and a trade centre store in Tauriko for timber, building materials and supplies. This expansion reflects the growth experienced throughout the Tauranga region, says Tammy. She says the development also signals positive news for local employment, with the company creating numerous jobs for community members, alongside team members from surrounding stores. Completed by Marra Construction, based in Greerton, the construction project demonstrated a commitment to supporting local businesses, says Tammy. Building consent was granted by Tauranga City Council in October 2024, with construction completed in April 2025, following an approximate eight-month build period. As part of the opening ceremony, Ngāti Ranginui iwi officially blessed the site just before sunrise. The ceremony featured traditional waiata to support the whaikōrero, creating a profound sense of unity and cultural acknowledgement. Following the ceremony, a BBQ was held for the team and guests, further enhancing the sense of community. “Our store openings are an important opportunity for us to connect with our local communities,” says Bunnings New Zealand general manager, Melissa Haines. “We are grateful to Ngāti Ranginui for their warm welcome and support in the lead- up to our opening, and for performing the blessing at our event.” Environmental considerations influenced the development, with Bunnings making the decision to preserve a large oak tree located on the property boundary between the store and the council reserve. The company elected to remove two car-parking spaces to protect the tree’s root system and ensure its continued health. “It was council’s preference to retain the oak tree as it provides significant benefits to the community, including shade and cooling for the surrounding area, habitat for local wildlife, improved air quality and enhanced aesthetic value for the neighbourhood. Bunnings was happy to be able to facilitate protecting the tree,” says Melissa. Located at 1150 Cameron Road, the new store represents another milestone in Bunnings’ expansion throughout New Zealand, Melissa says, bringing its signature blend of a wide range of products, competitive pricing and community focus to another growing regional centre.
