T T Virginia Wright It’s been 25 years since Skip Golden bought his first secondhand truck, a cost-effective and fit-for-purpose 1995 Mitsubishi FV330, and entered the transport business under the name Golden Contracting working out of Whangaparaoa. As the customer base has increased steadily over the years, so has the size of the business. Now with a longstanding team behind it, and a pool of experienced subcontractors ready to answer the call, Golden Contracting knows it can respond to customers’ requirements efficiently and professionally. Fourteen years ago, Skip set up Silverdale Aggregates, and four years later Silverdale Diesel Services, all three companies now working together as a group to support not only Golden Contracting, but also the wider transport industry, explains Skip. “It’s never been about trying do it all yourself. Sharing the load expands your network and earns respect in the game. Typically, the linehaul bulk transport firms across New Zealand back-load metal from quarries all over Northland, so we have top-end, graded products, tried and tested, available here in Silverdale, and it helps everyone’s margins.” Silverdale Diesel Services operates out of Golden Contracting’s workshop, and was the natural result of Skip needing to better utilise Golden’s mechanics when all their fleet was out for the day, and make it work to others’ advantage. The workshop is equipped with a wide array of tooling, hoists, and welding equipment, including digital scanning technology. All this increases efficiencies, and they pass on savings where they can through buying power, which in turn creates a steady flow of work. Efficiency and productivity are central to Skip’s philosophy. “It’s the small things that count, the crumbs that make the loaf, so to speak.” That’s why they invested in a tyre machine 10 years ago to reduce the amount of labour-intensive work involved with their continual rotation of tyres and fitments. “The right tools are an extension to your hands. “You can get another 15,000 to 20,000 k’s out of a set of tyres if they’ve been stored in the cool and dark to harden them. You invest, and it pays off over time, it all comes down to margins,” Skip explains. Golden Contracting is the hub that drives all three companies with their diverse fleet of tipper trucks, which includes Mack, Volvo, Mercedes, Fuso and Scania. “Our fleet is our advertising, which is why we go the extra mile on signage and they all have personalised plates or artwork to suit the truck or mark an occasion for the driver,” says Skip. Skip’s drivers tend to stay on with the team, which is why one of the number plates for another new Volvo reads ‘W8NGLD’, bought for Andrew Carr, who’s been there for 19 years. Golden Contracting’s workload can see them driving from the deep Waikato to the tip of the north, or keeping the entire fleet local.
