CONTRACTING After more than 35 years of painting, roofing, and waterproofing in the Waikato, Hamilton-based Cantec Services continues to build its reputation as one of the region’s most trusted providers, delivering high-quality workmanship and genuine care for clients and staff alike. Managing director Brendon McLean joined the business as an apprentice 30 years ago, and today he co-owns the company with one of its original founders, Neil Waites, who has now retired. With 38 staff and a base in Hamilton, Cantec mainly operates throughout the Waikato and the Bay of Plenty; however it has worked nationwide, providing painting, roofing, and specialist waterproofing services for commercial, industrial, and residential clients. Its project list of long-standing clients includes major local names like Fonterra, Wintec, and the Waikato DHB. “Over the years, we’ve evolved with the industry, embraced new technologies and safer, more environmentally friendly products.” says Brendon. The company’s biggest asset, Brendon says, is its people, many of whom have been part of the team for decades. “I’ve just had my ninth employee roll over 20 years with us. About 80% of our team has been here more than 10 years, and that says a lot about our work environment.” He puts the long staff tenure down to a culture of care and family values. “If something’s not right at home, my staff are no good to me at work. Family comes first, and we support them however we can.” Among the benefits Cantec offers its team is a company-funded gym membership, which many take up. “It’s about wellbeing,” Brendon says. “A healthy body generally means a healthy mind as well. We also give our staff time off every now and then to go and recharge, and they come back in a great headspace. That sort of thing matters.” Cantec’s structure is built on people, with Brendon describing the staff on the ground as the business’s backbone, and the team in the office its heart. “Our customers are the blood that keeps it all moving.” Customer satisfaction is something the company takes personally. “We aim to do every job right the first time.” That attitude has seen the business build long-standing relationships with clients, and maintain a strong reputation for reliability and professionalism, and these are especially vital attributes in the current tough economic climate. “We are focusing on looking after our clients and delivering the same high standard of service we always have.
