The supervisor is responsible for the team of qualified and apprentice carpenters, co-ordinating all the sub-trades, to ensure the build progresses according to schedule and the Contracts Manager engages with the client during the build.” An emphasis on training the next generation of carpenters has always been a special character of the company and this year, one of its apprentices, Jayden Buckingham, proved his worth by winning the Auckland Regional Apprentice of the Year Award, leading him to represent his region at the national finals held in Auckland, October 9-10. “We are all very proud of Jayden’s award. He demonstrates a real commitment to learning and attention to detail.” T T Sue Russell Jayden was given responsibilities within the substantial new build of the Karioatahi Surf Life Saving Clubrooms, nearing completion and due to open in November this year. The project began in April 2024 with the demolition of the old building, the new club sporting a multi-function training room, accommodation and kitchen facilities. “It’s been a very engaging project right from the start, given the commitment of the community supporting it, all the fundraising that has occurred and the impact this new purpose-built facility will have long-term. “It was Jayden’s extensive, detailed knowledge of this project that caught the attention of the Auckland judges in the regional award and we’re looking forward to the grand opening soon.” Pukekohe Builders currently engages five apprentices, at various stages of learning, within the carpentry team. Once qualified, carpenters are encouraged to pursue further building training to become site supervisors, licensed building practitioners or to gain qualifications in specialised skills within construction. Offering full project management capability is a particular strength of the company, and often they are engaged early on in a building project, liaising with the client, the architect/ designer in those early conversations.
