88 | Coastal living at its finest The village centre has been designed to accommodate six tenancies Kahawai Point T T Karen Phelps DEVELOPMENT A vibrant village centre is set to become the beating heart of Kahawai Point, the new coastal development at Glenbrook, south of Auckland. “It’s important for the Kahawai Point community, but also the Glenbrook Beach community. It’s the first local centre of significance and is a great point for gathering and meeting people in a coastal village environment. It’s a big attraction,” says developer Bernie Chote from KPDL. The village centre has been designed to accommodate six tenancies. Local grocery store company Paddock to Pantry is the first tenant that has activated the village centre. The rest of the covered space is being utilised for community and food truck events until the rest of the tenancies are completed. The structure includes a motif by Ngati Te Ata artist Michelle Black. Called Paatiki (flounder), it represents the flounder living in the two rivers that Kahawai Points sits on the confluence of – the Taihiki River and the Waiuku River. We are already fielding expressions of interest to work with future tenants to take up positions in the growing village,” says Bernie. He says Kahawai Point is establishing itself as a highly connected community, set on 65ha of coastal land and positioned just 15 minutes from Waiuku and 20 minutes from Pukekohe, with easy access to primary and secondary schools, medical facilities, banking services and everyday shopping needs. The development currently has a thriving community of around 700 people, with a projected population when completed of approximately 2400. The development will eventually accommodate 800 homes, and Bernie says good opportunities still exist with a handful of sections available in stage 4, and stage 5 selling well, offering premium home sites nestled between riverfront and new community amenities. Sites range from 300sqm to 840sqm, and allow for both one- and two-storey homes. Currently, multiple builders are active at Kahawai Point, including G.J. Gardner Homes, Jennian Homes, Navigation Homes, Precision Homes and Signature Homes. One of the most unique additions to the development will be the Kahawai Point Marine Centre, which will offer full marine facilities for boating and fishing enthusiasts. “This is something unheard of in the Manakau Harbour, as there is no deep water access presently,” explains Bernie. The marine centre, currently in concept design, will feature a new club facility for multiple age groups, a public and members’ parking area, and connections to the coastal walkway network that has been carefully integrated throughout Kahawai Point. Bernie says KPDL is committed to environmental stewardship and is conserving zones of coastal land for future generations. This includes the preservation of the iconic pohutukawa along the coastal fringe, including a small neighbourhood park that features Kahawai Point’s stunning Hei Matau artwork. Bernie says section sales have been progressing well, and more recently there has been even more interest. “People are seeing we’ve made investment in the village centre, and more and more people are coming to see what’s on offer and buying into the coastal village environment and all it offers. “It’s still attracting a diverse range of buyers from first-home buyers, to young families to retirees to those who can work from home. Kahawai Point is a place truly above the rest, an inspired coastal community.” Playgrounds that sell lifestyles.
