The business was established more than 40 years ago by Phil and Bev Marra, and remains a proudly family-owned company, run by family members together with key long-term staff, who blend experience, continuity and strong family values. Today, Marra Construction employs more than 50 people and is recognised as one of the largest and most respected commercial builders in Tauranga and the wider region. Their experience spans development, design-and-build, and large-scale construction across multiple sectors, including industrial facilities, interior fit-outs, education, community and healthcare projects, commercial and retail developments, and residential apartments. This breadth of capability reflects a depth of industry knowledge built through delivering some of the Bay of Plenty’s most significant construction projects. A key contributor to the company’s success is its strong, loyal workforce, with several team members having been with the business for more than 35 years. Project manager, Rodney Mills, exemplifies this commitment. He began with Marra Construction 18 years ago as a work experience student, and completed his carpentry apprenticeship with the company. Progressing through the roles of site manager and project manager, Rodney has held his current position for the past six years. By employing their site staff directly, rather than relying on short-term contractors, Marra Construction maintains greater control over project scheduling and quality outcomes. This approach allows the team to manage challenges efficiently and minimise delays. Long‑standing relationships with trusted subcontractors further support reliable project delivery, with loyalty and accountability extending both ways. Whether undertaking a small-scale office refurbishment or managing an 18‑month mixed-use development, such as the Waihi Reef project, Marra Construction has earned the confidence of property developers and commercial architects alike for consistently delivering projects on time and within budget. The Waihi Reef complex is the most recent of Marra Construction’s development projects in partnership with Colin Booth, and was project managed by Rodney. Located just a short walk from Waihi Beach, the development was thoughtfully designed to maximise its coastal setting. Marra Construction commenced work following project consent and completion of earthworks, delivering the foundations and overseeing construction through to completion. One of the three blocks comprises 11 purpose-built, 77sqm ground-floor premises designed for retail and service-based businesses, with 11 two-bedroom apartments above. These low-maintenance apartments feature open-plan living and decks at both ends, capturing ample sunlight and semi‑rural views. The apartments proved extremely popular upon release. The remaining two blocks each feature eight three-bedroom luxury townhouses. These include double garages at ground level and well-appointed living spaces above, with fully equipped kitchens, tiled bathrooms, and wool carpet throughout. The master bedroom and ensuite are located on the first floor, with two additional bedrooms, a laundry, and family bathroom on the upper level, together providing a functional and comfortable layout for modern living. Delivered to a high standard of workmanship and finish, the Waihi Reef complex reflects the expertise of the Marra Construction team and Rodney’s attention to detail. Offering turnkey living options for both locals and visitors, the development stands as another high-quality addition to Marra Construction’s enduring legacy in the Bay of Plenty.
