The practice has just completed a project for Cypress Properties located at 364 Taurikura Drive in Tauranga. “This project forms part of the wider expansion of Tauriko as a key logistics and industrial hub for Tauranga,” explains practice director Matt Allen. “Delivered in partnership with iLine Construction, it includes a 1500-square-metre warehouse supported by a 171-square-metre two-level office building, designed to accommodate a range of industrial and manufacturing users.” The building uses a steel portal frame and concrete tilt panel construction with aluminium panel and metal cladding externally. Large aluminium joinery and full-height glazing bring natural light into the office areas, and a roller door and canopy make heavyvehicle access easy. The yard has been formed in fibre reinforced concrete to withstand intensive use, and the site layout separates truck and car movements to improve safety and efficiency. Matt says a key feature of the project was the compressed time frame, while prior experience with the client helped streamline the process. Restoring ecosystems T T Virginia Wright Having majored in biological sciences at the University of Waikato, and followed his bachelor’s and master’s degree with four years consulting, ecologist Adam Purcell now runs Titoki Landcare which he cofounded in 2021 to provide specialist services in ecological restoration. “With Titoki Landcare, we are primarily restoration ecologists, so we use that understanding of the natural world, and relationships between different organisms and the environment, to restore degraded ecosystems,” says Adam. “We depend on the environment for our survival and biodiversity is central to that, along with more obvious things like flood protection, water quality, and food production, all of which rely on healthy ecosystems.” “New Zealand is recognised internationally as one of earth’s biodiversity hotspots because we have such unique plants and animals here thanks to our isolation, and a lot of our native plants, animals and ecosystems are threatened because they haven’t been taken care of very well over the last 200 years.” Over the last 20 years efforts have increasingly been made to reverse the decline. “We’ve completed similar projects for Cypress Properties before so there was already a solid level of trust and understanding,” he says. “That makes a huge difference when you are working to tight deadlines and need decisions made quickly.” Located in Mt Maunganui, Cube Architecture was founded by Matt in 2020. Since then, it has grown into a tightly run studio delivering a wide range of projects across the commercial, residential and industrial sectors. It employs a small team of architectural technicians and is intentionally structured to remain hands-on. “Being small allows us to stay closely connected to every project,” says Matt. “We’re very approachable, and clients often tell us we are easy to work with and that we listen. That feedback is important to us because it shapes the outcome.” The studio is currently involved in several major developments, including a Quest Hotel in Havelock North and a 72-unit retirement facility underway in Pyes Pa, Tauranga. Working with skilled and knowledgeable ecologists such as those on the Titoki team maximises the chance of a project’s success as they put their experience in restoration and the management of biodiversity to good use. Hamilton City Council for example has a goal of returning the city to 10% native ecosystem, up from its current 2% which is low enough to be under threat of disappearing altogether. “They need to restore about 900 hectares to meet that goal and we’re helping them on quite a few sites around the city. We’ve helped them with restoration plans and gathering baseline data to work out the starting point, then how to achieve that goal,” Adam says. He says farmers, catchment groups, and others are increasingly working together to improve the long-term resilience of the land.
