CIVIL CONSTRUCTION Green Civil T T Karen Phelps Colquhoun Construction Civil projects bring a huge sense of pride T T Sue Russell Green Civil marked a significant milestone last year, a decade in business that has seen the Auckland-based civil construction company grow from a modest start-up into a well-established operator delivering complex projects across the greater Auckland area. Founded in 2015 by Wayne Green and business partner Luke Michell, the company was born out of a shared desire to combine complementary skills and create a more integrated civil works offering. Wayne brought extensive experience as a project manager for various civil works companies, while Luke was already working as a drainage subcontractor. “The idea was to combine forces and do things properly, using our experience to deliver a full service rather than fragmented packages,” says Wayne. The company’s first job was a residential subdivision in Sandringham, comprising around 50 lots. That early project proved pivotal. “That job really kick-started everything, and gave us the confidence to push forward,” says Wayne. Ten years on, Green Civil has grown considerably, both in the scale of its work and the size of its team. It now employs around 30 staff, with many having been with the business since its early years. Five years ago, Debbie and Jamie Colquhoun decided it was the perfect time to bring their many years of experience and expertise working in the civil construction sector into a business of their own, with the express aim of delivering the best-possible outcomes to a range of clients and long-standing valued partners. The Auckland-based company has, within its team, a combined experience base extending over 250 years. During her 40-plus-year journey in the sector, Debbie has held a number of national roles supporting training and governance; implementing safety, quality management and environmental systems into some of this country’s key infrastructure projects and supporting small and medium businesses in the sector. As managing director at Colquhoun Construction her responsibilities extend to working closely with Greg Watters, general manager, and Jamie Colquhoun, operations manager to ensure there’s a strong work-book of projects ahead. The workforce includes highly qualified drainlayers and experienced machine operators, supported by robust in-house Health & Safety systems. “We take Health & Safety seriously and run our own in-house protocols,” says Wayne. “It’s about protecting our people and delivering projects the right way.” The company operates across the greater Auckland region, but is willing to travel further afield when projects require. Recent work has included completing site cuts and drainage for a builder in Kerikeri, alongside numerous developments throughout central Auckland. Green Civil positions itself as a one-stopshop for civil works offering services including civil construction, drainage, earthworks, site clearance, subdivisions, roading, concrete work, kerbing and car parks. A key point of difference is that most work is carried out in-house. The company is currently involved in several major developments. These include a 40-townhouse project on Beachhaven Road, where it is delivering the full civil package, from clearing, sediment controls and earthworks through to drainage, services, concrete works, hardscaping and landscaping. Strong client relationships are central to the company’s approach. “We focus on service, communication and long-term trust,” says Wayne. “You know, in hindsight, when we started the business, it was at one of the toughest times for the sector, but I know we are in a good position, based on ensuring our standards of operation, our attention to detail, our commitment to our staff and especially our engagement with clients have been of the highest standards,” Debbie says. Known as a contractor of choice to deliver complex earthworks, drainage, roading and structures projects, they complement their management and engineering experience with specialised plant operators with a no-nonsense approach to project delivery. Colquhoun Construction has developed a training ground for many people into the sector, an element of the ongoing company’s fabric Debbie is especially proud of. “Over the years, we have seen many new people enter the sector, taken under the wing of an experienced operator, and taught how to work machinery correctly, how to deliver to a consistently high standard of work, and to grow in confidence and commitment to the industry,” she says. “Even when they leave us, to go overseas, or gain other experiences, we’re very proud of what they have achieved and it’s lovely, sometimes, to see people return to work for us.” Robin Bean 027 540 1216 kerbscape@gmail.com www.kerbscape.co.nz Proudly supporting Green Civil 0800 800 611 stevenson.co.nz • Truck Hire • Truck Sales • Equipment Rental Proudly supporting ColquhounConstruction quotes@cvh.co.nz 0800 284 4473 B-Select Onehunga 21 Selwyn St, Onehunga 09 622 2622  Tyres  WOF  Auto Servicing  Repairs  Wheel Alignment  Batteries  Wheels YOUR HOME FOR TYRES & AUTO SERVICING
