T T Karen Phelps What started as a shearing company has now become a fixture in New Zealand’s fencing industry for over 40 years, earning a reputation for quality workmanship and a personal touch that only a family-run business can provide. Founded in 1971 by Dale Barakat and his father Henry, Barakat Contractors branched into fencing during the winter months when there was no shearing work. “Over time the fencing side of the business grew so much and sheep numbers were declining, so we had no choice but to focus on the fencing full-time,” says Emma Barakat, co-owner and business manager. The Barakat family remains at the heart of the company, with Emma, her husband Carl, and Dale, all playing active roles. Carl, who joined the company straight after school, has become a specialist in high-spec electric security fencing, project- managing complex jobs while also working on-site. Dale concentrates on site visits, quoting and material procurement and project start-ups, while Emma manages compliance, Health & Safety, finance, accounts and administration. “Being family-owned means our clients deal with us direct and we can offer loyalty to all those we deal with – clients, suppliers and reps,” says Emma. Barakat Contractors specialises in a wide range of agricultural and security fencing systems. Its services include chain-link, electric, rural and commercial fencing, as well as gates, retaining walls, wildlife enclosures and earth-compliant temporary fencing for sites such as substations. The company operates primarily in Auckland and Waikato, though its expertise is sought nationwide. It is a member of the Fencing Contractors Association NZ (FCANZ), Site Safe (achieving SiteWise Gold certification) and Totika. Emma says the family’s commitment to quality and client relationships sets it apart. “We focus on building strong relationships and ensuring the client’s requirements are met in every project,” she says. Barakat Contractors has built a reputation for high-standard security solutions. Its mesh fencing provides a robust security option for commercial and public-facing sites. The company is also a leading installer of Gallagher electric fences, which offer alarm-monitored deterrence against intruders. “The electric fence gives a safe deterrent shock to a would-be intruder, while the alarm monitoring enables an immediate response to any security breach,” Emma explains. Agricultural fencing remains a cornerstone of the business, with installations spanning dairy flats, hill country farms and more. Wildlife and recreational fencing are also key areas of expertise. Enclosures have housed species from cheetahs and chimpanzees to kiwi and spider monkeys, all built to meet Ministry of Primary Industries requirements. In recreational projects, the company has installed tennis court fencing, cricket backstops and baseball pitch frames among others. Current projects include fencing for correctional facilities, substations, Watercare, motorsport parks and agricultural fencing.
