Build It Northland T T Karen Phelps BUILDING Build It Northland has cemented its reputation as one of the Far North’s most trusted construction firms, winning the Small Business category at the 2025 Northland Business Excellence Awards and reinforcing its standing as a company built on craftsmanship, community and care. Founded in 2018, the Kaitaia-based, family-owned business has grown steadily over seven years by focusing on quality workmanship, strong relationships and a supportive workplace culture. “Build It Northland is more than just a construction company; we are a family-driven business deeply committed to our community and the wellbeing of our team,” says Phillip Tracey, who co-owns the company with his wife, Emma. “Winning the 2025 Northland Business Excellence Award for Small Business is a reflection of the hard work our team puts in every single day.” Born and bred in the Far North, Phill has worked in the building industry for more than 25 years. After gaining his National Certificate in Carpentry in 2003, he gained experience across the country and internationally before establishing the company. As a licensed building practitioner and NZ Certified Builder, he continues to lead projects on-site, ensuring every build meets strict industry standards. Emma oversees operations behind the scenes, managing accounts, administration and daily logistics to keep projects running smoothly. “Our vision is to be Northland’s most trusted and innovative building company, consistently delivering exceptional quality and sustainable solutions while making a positive impact on our community,” she explains. “We communicate that vision clearly with our staff and stakeholders so everyone understands the direction we are heading.” Build It Northland employs seven staff, including two qualified builders and four apprentices, alongside a regular contracted builder and two casual employees for busier periods. The company places strong emphasis on mentoring and training, investing in Site Safe qualifications, First Aid certification and weekly apprenticeship support sessions to develop the next generation of tradespeople. Operating in a challenging market marked by low building consent levels and rising construction costs, it has adapted by diversifying into renovations and smaller-scale projects. “When we saw a downturn in new builds and a rise in renovation demand, we adjusted our focus and marketing to match,” says Phill. “Being agile and listening to our customers has helped us maintain steady growth, even during uncertain times.” Customer satisfaction remains central to its success, with around 60% of projects coming from repeat or referred clients, and an average satisfaction rating of 4.7 out of 5 over the past year. Clear communication, transparent estimates and consistent quality assurance underpin its client relationships. Health, safety and compliance are equally prioritised. Through its integration of digital safety systems and commitment to SiteWise Gold standards, it maintains strict oversight of worksites, subcontractors and regulatory obligations. It is also a member of HazardCo, New Zealand Certified Builders, and is a licensed building practitioner. Beyond bricks and mortar, the business fosters a close-knit team culture, encouraging balance between hard work and the outdoor lifestyle the Far North is known for. “We believe supporting each other on and off the tools keeps us performing at our best,” says Phill. Looking ahead, sustainability, innovation and community engagement remain core pillars of the company’s strategy. “We are proud of our journey so far and excited about the future as we continue to build not only homes but also strong community foundations in Northland,” Emma says. “We believe this holistic outlook and dedication to excellence set us apart.” New Zealand Certi ed Builders Association CB LICENSED BUILDING PRACTITIONERS Building confidence 021 047 8083 builditnorthland.co.nz Your trusted builders in Kaitaia, specialising in new builds, renovations & extensions.
