Angus McKellar Builders “It matters to people to feel heard and supported throughout the process, and that’s something I’m really passionate about.” BUILDING A boutique townhouse development taking shape on Gordon Avenue in St Albans is showcasing the approach and values that have helped Angus McKellar Builders carve out a strong reputation in Christchurch’s residential construction market. Designed by Figure & Ground Architects, the Gordon Avenue project comprises four, three-bedroom townhouses, each measuring between 150 and 160sqm, and featuring an attached garage With construction well underway and completion due in mid-2026, the development is already attracting strong interest and provides a good example of the type of high-quality homes Angus McKellar Builders delivers, says company director Angus McKellar. “Angus McKellar Builders has forged a reputation as a trusted building company to build very high-end homes, and this project really stands out,” he says. Clad in a mix of brick and vertical cedar, the homes are positioned as upmarket residences with a strong emphasis on quality materials and thoughtful layouts. Interiors feature timber floors, fully tiled bathrooms and 100% wool carpet, reinforcing a sense of durability and understated luxury. Three of the four homes are arranged over two levels, with kitchen, dining and living areas on the ground floor, along with a toilet, internal-access garage and lift. Upstairs, there are three large bedrooms, including a master suite with ensuite and walk-in wardrobe, a shared bathroom and two storage areas. The fourth home offers a slightly different configuration, with a ground-floor master suite and an upper level that includes two bedrooms, a study and shared bathroom, and no lift. The development follows a successful four-townhouse project completed last year on Cornwall Street, also in St Albans, and reflects the company’s growing focus on architecturally designed, high-quality residential work. Founded in 2019, Angus McKellar Builders was born from a desire to combine a long-standing love of building with a more personal way of working. After starting his building career in Christchurch in 2011, and gaining experience across hundreds of projects, Angus decided it was time to go out on his own. “I wanted to showcase my skills and work more closely with clients,” he says. “It matters to people to feel heard and supported throughout the process, and that’s something I’m really passionate about.” That philosophy extends to the team itself. All staff are employed directly rather than engaged as contractors, fostering what Angus describes as a genuine team culture built on trust, responsibility and shared pride in the work. “There’s good energy on-site and a real passion for building,” Angus says. “We go out of our way to deliver the client’s vision and that only works when everyone is aligned.” The company works Christchurch-wide and its growing portfolio includes new builds, large-scale renovations and landscape construction. Current projects include a significant renovation of a heritage-listed home designed and once owned by prominent Victorian architect Cecil Wood. “Angus McKellar Builders is proud to be commencing the renovation of the former home of Cecil Wood, one of New Zealand’s most influential early architects. “A major component of the project is the full renewal of the cedar shingle roof, undertaken with a careful respect for the home’s architectural heritage and original character,” explains Angus. The company is preparing for further growth, with plans for another high-end, architecturally designed development in St Albans, and an expansion of the team. “We’re well established now and continuing to grow,” says Angus. “The focus is on maintaining high standards, clear communication and delivering quality outcomes that clients can trust.” Plumbing | Gas Fitting | Drainage www.kilrayplumbing.co.nz 63 Grassmere Street Papanui Christchurch 8052 0800 545 729 Proudly supporting Angus McKellar Builders 03 335 0462 info@tarc.co.nz tarc.co.nz Proud to work closely with Angus McKellar Builders www.datumsurveying.co.nz Surveying South Island wide 027 408 3156 Subdivisions | Boundary Adjustments | Topographical Surveys | Easement Surveys | Building Setout & BLCs
