Phoenix Healthcare Group REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT A much-needed health hub, opened by the Phoenix Healthcare Group in the fast-growing Canterbury town of Rolleston, will provide a range of healthcare services for the local community. The contract for the hub was awarded to the company in December 2023, following a joint tender process undertaken by Selwyn District Council and Health New Zealand. Phoenix Healthcare chief operating officer Claire Pennington says the hub was built to provide flexibility for growth in the town, and a range of health services to fit the evolving healthcare landscape expected for the community in the coming years. “Phoenix was aware prior to the start of the tender process that a significant population within the Selwyn district did not have access to a GP within their area,” Claire says. “Phoenix, as an organisation, aims to close gaps in healthcare delivery and to develop and provide services that increase access to health.” While the hub will prioritise standard GP and nursing services in the first instance, options for hosting other specialist health services are already being explored, possibly from as early as August this year, she says. Currently, there are six consult rooms, a procedure room, two triage rooms and a treatment zone at the facility. The company is committed to exploring options to provide extended hours and urgent care services in the future, which Claire says will require a different utilisation of the space when these services become available. The team is a mixture of staff based solely at the Rolleston site, and others working across both the company’s Christchurch city-centre site on Moorhouse Avenue and the Rolleston site to ensure they can effectively respond to the needs of enrolled patients, and offer a choice of healthcare professionals. Claire says with well-documented challenges in primary care across the country, the company is proud to have opened the site in Rolleston. “We are mindful of sustainability, and will be working alongside other healthcare providers in the district to ensure that the Selwyn population have choice in where to have their healthcare needs met, and our plan is to grow our services and our workforce, Claire says. “The facility has been carefully designed to be spacious, inclusive and culturally responsive, providing options for planned and unplanned care for years to come.” The Phoenix Healthcare Group, which began operating in 2018, includes a home and community division that provides home care and district nursing services for a large range of publicly funded and private clients. It also has a GP services division that provides primary care services, as well as occupational health services and ear microsuctioning services. “The Phoenix Healthcare Group are able to leverage the strength of a wide group of clinical and non-clinical professionals to deliver healthcare services in a way that matters most to the people who access this care,” Claire says.
