T T Kelly Deeks Laser Plumbing Christchurch East is expanding its footprint across Christchurch, while creating new pathways for staff development, with the long-established business launching a dedicated CBD branch to support growth and future leadership opportunities. The company operates across plumbing, drainage, gas fitting, roofing, and facility maintenance, with a strong focus on commercial maintenance alongside residential work. Directors Anthony Watson and Brad Weir say that core focus has helped the business remain steady through a challenging construction market. “We are still doing what we have always done, delivering a very high standard of work for our customers,” Anthony says. “Commercial maintenance is the biggest part of the business, but we also cover new housing, smaller maintenance, and large commercial fit-outs.” Recent investment in a hydrovac unit has added capability within the commercial division, opening new service opportunities. “It has given us another tool for the type of work we already do and has created some new opportunities in the maintenance space,” says Anthony. Brad, who has been with the company for 18 years, has recently joined Anthony in the ownership group, in which Anthony has been involved for the past eight years. Together, they lead a team of about 21 staff servicing Christchurch and surrounding areas. Anthony says the commercial focus has been key to retaining staff and continuing to grow during the downturn. “We have been fortunate that our commercial maintenance work has kept the team busy. We have been able to hold on to staff and continue to grow when others have slowed down.” New branch brings more opportunities The company continues to invest heavily in apprenticeships, with staff exposed to a wide range of work, from small repairs through to major commercial projects. “Our apprentices get exposure to everything,” Anthony says. “That range of work is important for their development and getting them through their training properly.” Laser Plumbing Christchurch East is a proud member of Master Plumbers, an affiliation that helps ensure the business remains up to date with industry best practice, while also reinforcing its commitment to quality workmanship, compliance, and ongoing skills development for staff and apprentices. A major step forward for the business has been the opening of Laser Plumbing Christchurch CBD, designed to service central-city commercial clients and support longterm workforce development. Anthony says the CBD branch is as much about people as it is about growth. “We have a strong team and we want to give them pathways into leadership and project management. The CBD work gives us that opportunity.” The new branch will also support 24-hour emergency callouts and provide services for hotels, property managers, and commercial buildings, including drainage, gas, grease trap servicing, and preventative maintenance. Anthony says the CBD operation is still in its early stages, but is an important step in the company’s long-term direction. “The goal is to create opportunities, grow our people, and keep delivering reliable service.” He says the new branch will operate as a standalone unit over time, without taking away from the Christchurch East base, but instead strengthening the overall business. “We are building something that allows our team to grow with us.
