60 | T T to page 62 Shanahan Architects: Christie Brothers Building T T Karen Phelps Region’s landscape inspires design Registered architect Allan Shanahan has recently completed a deeply personal project in Wanaka: a small development of three homes including one for his own family. For the Shanahans, the South Island town has long been a holiday destination, and the family seized the opportunity to create a home that reflects both their lifestyle and the region’s character. “My wife Luisa has been a major driving force behind the development, which realises a dream held for many years,” says Allan. “This project demonstrates how Shanahan Architects responds to the needs of clients – in this case my wife – and delivering a project that will appeal to people who either live or holiday in Wanaka.” The development, situated on Beacon Point Road, occupies a 1457sqm site in one of Wanaka’s older-established areas. An old crib was removed to make way for three standalone houses. The Shanahans will keep one, with the other two intended for sale. One has already been sold to a friend, with negotiations underway for the remaining property. The family home spans 255sqm and features four bedrooms, each with an ensuite bathroom. Inside, timber-lined walls and rough-sawn totara floorboards evoke the feel of a traditional wool shed, blending rustic charm with modern comfort. The exterior draws inspiration from Central Otago architecture with gables, cedar cladding, stonework and tray roofing. Allan’s great-great-grandfather was a stonemason, who built a house in Arrowtown, and the ruins of that property still stand on the local golf course. “That was a major driver for bringing stone masonry into the Wanaka house design,” Allan explains. Schist sourced from Glenorchy, finished with a bagged texture, and wool carpets, add further warmth and authenticity. The other two homes complement the family residence while offering distinct layouts. One mirrors the family home in style and materials, while the other features a more modern shape, but maintains the same material palette. Both include multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as living spaces designed for privacy and communal gatherings, catering to families that might spend extended periods in Wanaka.
