T T Alexia Anderson Timaru based Silva Studio is helping shape South Canterbury’s architectural landscape with a portfolio of thoughtfully designed residential and commercial projects. Founded by architectural designer Felipe Silva Valdes, Silva Studio has built a reputation for delivering practical, client-focused architectural solutions tailored to both the environment and clients. Silva Studio offers a wide range of architectural services, including planning analysis, preliminary design and construction documentation. Felipe entered the sector, driven by a strong passion for meaningful design and the impact buildings can have on people’s daily lives. “My journey into architectural design began with a strong interest in how buildings influence the way people live, work and connect with their surroundings,” he says. “I have always been drawn to design that is both practical and meaningful — spaces that not only function well but also create a sense of comfort and identity for the people using them.” After gaining experience across a wide range of projects, Felipe identified a growing demand for a collaborative and approachable design experience, ultimately inspiring him to establish Silva Studio in Timaru. “South Canterbury has a unique character, strong community values, and an evolving architectural landscape that creates exciting opportunities for thoughtful design,” he says. Felipe’s background in both architectural design and construction management continues to help shape Silva Studio’s work, allowing projects to have a balance between creativity and practicality. “It has allowed me to approach projects not only from a design standpoint, but also with a strong understanding of how buildings are practically constructed, coordinated, and delivered on site.” He says it is that understanding that helps ensure projects remain realistic, buildable and efficient throughout the entire process. Silva Studio’s work spans a wide range of sectors across South Canterbury and beyond, including residential homes, renovations, commercial fit-outs and small-scale developments. Felipe says while residential projects tend to focus heavily on lifestyle and personal connection, commercial work often places greater emphasis on operational efficiency, branding and compliance. “Whether it is a family home or a commercial fit-out, the goal is always to create spaces that are well considered, functional and tailored to the people using them.” Silva Studio is also committed to collaboration and transparency throughout every stage of a project’s journey. “For us, a collaborative and transparent design process means making clients feel involved, informed and supported throughout every stage of their project,” Felipe says. He says maintaining strong communication and clear expectations from the outset helps simplify the process for clients. Providing end-to-end support has also become a major strength of the business, with Silva Studio guiding projects from early planning stages through to construction completion. “Ultimately, clients benefit from having a single point of contact and a trusted team that understands the project from start to finish.” Latest projects reflect broader industry trends that are starting to emerge throughout South Canterbury, including increasing demand for energy-efficient, functional and cost-effective spaces. Felipe says many clients are now prioritising natural light, flexible living arrangements and stronger indoor-outdoor flow, while also ensuring timeless architectural design that complements the local landscape. In the commercial scene, businesses are placing greater importance on creating spaces that strengthen their brand while also improving customer and staff experience. Felipe says his plans for Silva Studio is to continue expanding both the range and scale of projects it takes on while remaining committed to its client-focused philosophy.
