A new housing development in the heart of Ashburton is set to offer residents an affordable, low-maintenance living option within walking distance of the town centre – and it is already generating interest before it has even hit the market. Muldrew Properties is behind the five-unit development at 271 Moore Street, close to the central business district. The company was launched two years ago by Lydia and Dave Muldrew, of Muldrew Builders, which is constructing the project. “We wanted to branch out into creating our own developments, and this type of development is not common at all in Ashburton,” says Lydia. “We think it offers a new and affordable option for the local area that is well suited to first-home buyers, or anyone wanting a low-maintenance lifestyle.” The site comprises one standalone townhouse and four smaller townhouses. The standalone property spans 228sqm across two storeys, featuring three bedrooms, two bathrooms (including an ensuite off the master bedroom), a separate laundry, a balcony on the upper level, and a covered patio downstairs with stacker doors opening to the outdoor area. It comes with a double garage. The four remaining townhouses are approximately 163sqm each. Their lower level accommodates a single garage, two bedrooms and a bathroom. The upper level houses the main living area, kitchen, master bedroom and ensuite. Each also includes a separate laundry, an upper-level balcony, a covered downstairs patio and stacker doors. All five properties will feature white plaster cladding with contrasting Stria board in a contemporary design, with high raking ceilings in some of the townhouses lending a spacious feel throughout. The proximity to the CBD is a key selling point, says Lydia, alongside spacious bedrooms, nearby amenities, including a 24-hour gym, a small shopping centre, and Mona Square just around the corner. The development is currently under construction and due for completion in early 2027. The properties will be formally launched to the market next year, though word has already spread. “We’ve already had people enquire, who want to be kept up to date when we are ready to launch,” says Lydia. Muldrew Properties is backed by the expertise of Muldrew Builders, which the couple founded in 2016. With more than 20 years in the building industry, Muldrew Builders focuses on residential new builds across Mid-Canterbury and beyond, including Ashburton, Oamaru, Ōhau, Twizel, Waitaki and Omarama. The firm is a member of New Zealand Master Builders and has won industry recognition for its work, including a regional gold award at the 2021 House of the Year competition in the Mid and South Canterbury category for a new home in the $450,000 to $600,000 range.
