Structur Building has built its reputation on the wide scope of construction projects it can tackle, driven by the expertise of its two directors Cole Bardwell and Ash Eustace. The pair founded the company in 2019 after working together at the same Dunedin building firm. Structur Building has steadily grown from a small residential operator into a business capable of delivering complex residential, commercial and specialist projects across Otago. “Ash and I have got around 30 years of combined experience across a huge range of building environments,” he says. “We both completed our apprenticeships in large construction and then transitioned into high-end architectural homes along with shop fitouts, hospitality and earthquake strengthening. “This means we can take on tricky and technically challenging projects, delivering a great result for our clients.” He says they have deliberately positioned in several key markets including high-end residential construction, renovations, extensions, commercial and insurance-related work. The range of projects it can complete is evident in its portfolio. Past work includes hospitality and retail projects such as Kai Whakapai Café and Eatery in Wānaka, Foot Locker in Christchurch’s Riccarton Mall and OCULA optometrists in Arrowtown. Cole says these jobs demonstrate the company’s ability to manage tight deadlines, detailed specifications and high foot-traffic environments while maintaining professional standards on site. One of its more challenging projects involved the construction of an indoor swimming pool in Dunedin. Cole explains that the pool was craned into place before the surrounding structure was built, requiring careful sequencing and safety planning. “It was one of those projects where everything had to happen in the right order,” he says. “We had internal scaffolding over the pool just to make sure everyone was safe while the build continued above it.” High-end residential work remains a core focus. A standout project in East Taieri, Mosgiel, designed by Andrew Ayoub Architect, saw Structur Building deliver a full architectural new build from foundations through to landscaping. Cole says the team handled everything from concrete driveways and retaining walls through to bespoke joinery and interior finishes. “It was a full package build. We essentially took it from bare ground to finished home, including all the external works,” he says. More recently Structur Building completed a highly customised outdoor structure featuring a pickleball court, pergola and outdoor kitchen, built largely in-house. The project included curved timber beams, reclaimed cathedral copper roofing and modified kitchen units with marble benchtops and custom detailing. Cole says the project reflects its ability to combine craftsmanship with design-led construction. “A lot of that work was fabricated in our workshop first, then assembled on site,” he says. One of its most challenging jobs to date was a large architectural extension in St Clair, Dunedin, designed by MORF Architecture. The project involved doubling the size of an existing home, adding a new kitchen, atrium stairwell, garage and upgraded living spaces while integrating the new structure into the original building. Cole says the biggest challenge, as with all renovation projects, was uncovering hidden issues within the existing house. “Once you start opening up an older home, you never quite know what you’ll find. It was about as tricky as a project gets in residential. So, it was a good showcase of how we can successfully complete these types of projects,” he says. Building employs five staff, with Ash managing projects on site and Cole handling pricing, administration and occasional hands-on building work. Current projects include a full villa renovation and a major extension in Dunedin involving structural alterations, roofing works and careful integration with existing materials. Cole says they are focused on steady organic growth with an eye to eventually moving into small-scale property development. For now the priority remains consistency and professionalism across every job, regardless of scale. Whether it’s a small renovation or a complex build, the expectation is the same,” he says. “It has to be done to the same high quality for which Structur Building has become known.”
