Three years ago brothers Hadley and Taylor Johnston, both having completed building apprenticeships, and each with other relevant skills, decided to form their own building company, Johnston Brothers Building. After completing his apprenticeship and working in Central Otago for Christie Brothers Building, Hadley had a role as a project manager in Sydney. Taylor completed a degree in quantity surveying before undertaking his apprenticeship in Dunedin and Kurow with Tony Van der Heyde Building. It was when Hadley returned from Australia that they decided the time was right to join forces and establish their own business. Their complementary backgrounds mean Hadley usually works directly with their clients, while Taylor works behind the scenes planning and pricing. They combine forces on each build, together with their crews. While Hadley’s experience tended towards high-end architectural builds and Taylor’s was in the solutions-oriented craftsmanship that’s essential for successful renovation work, they are united in their attention to detail and are focused on delivering every build with passion and precision. There has been no shortage of work over their first three years in business, with projects split between Central Otago and Dunedin. With Hadley based in Wanaka and Taylor in Dunedin, each with a strong team behind them, they can allocate resources according to different projects’ scheduling. “Depending on what stage a build is at, we get everyone there for a couple of weeks and get it to where one or two people can just carry it on,” says Hadley. One recently completed Wanaka build was designed and built for low maintenance without sacrificing style. The double pavilion structure, with a glass link between the two buildings, is entirely clad in ebony-stained thermally modified pine – an alternative to cedar. Achieving a barn-like look, it combines architectural sophistication with a simplicity of form that’s in total sympathy with its Wanaka surrounds. Another recently completed project is the result of a client wanting to build a duplex that stands out from the rest. They brought in Johnston Brothers Building from the concept stage to help them achieve exactly that, Hadley explains. “They wanted to build a higher-end duplex with an architectural feel. The resulting two-storey duplex with two, 204sqm homes is already bigger than most. Sited on the hill in Waverley the homes have the master bedroom and ensuite upstairs, and also the open-plan kitchen/ living area, which offers sweeping views of the Otago Harbour. Downstairs are two more bedrooms, a family bathroom, laundry and double garage. Notable features of the home are the fully tiled bathrooms, raking ceilings and all-day sun. The exterior is clad in sandstone grey Colorsteel with areas of copper-stained cedar, carefully chosen for ease of maintenance, and contrasting with light-coloured plaster to complete the look. The lines of Colorsteel carry through to the roof with remarkable precision that leave nothing to chance, Hadley explains. “It’s not just a roof to Joe (of Premier Roofing). Most people would just start at one corner and go for it, but Joe’s lasered it all and worked from the inside out so it all lines up perfectly.” It’s a work ethic that gels with the Johnston Brothers, who see all of their projects as a reflection of themselves and what they do. Being able to look at houses, knowing that their clients are happy living there and feeling proud of their work is for them the rewarding part of being builders.
