I still enjoy what I do, the people I work with, and the results we achieve. Being a qualified builder/joiner allows me to advise from design to completion.” Fowler Homes has been building houses across New Zealand for 41 years. The Christchurch branch was started in 1984. Ivan says its longevity and reputation come down to one simple thing – trust. “Our business is from 100% repeat and referred customers. People come to us because someone they know has worked with us before, they were happy to recommend us as they had a great experience.” The company’s track record speaks volumes. Customers also want house and land, turnkey packages, while Fowler Homes even build units and commercial properties. The company only offers a fixed-price contract, which Ivan says reduces risk for both client and builder. “People need certainty. They want to know they can trust the number we give them – we work very hard to deliver on that.” Ivan often reflects on his father’s advice: “If you look to the past, you will see the future.” He says that philosophy is particularly relevant in today’s housing market, where affordability is once again driving demand for cost-effective homes. “When I started, sections in Rolleston cost $30,000, a three-bedroom home with one bathroom cost $100,000. Now, largely due to affordability, some people are again looking for smaller homes, often with no garaging. These are warmer, drier, and built with more features, making them desirable, while still affordable.” Like all builders, Fowler Homes Christchurch South is operating in a challenging environment. Many issues influence costs, and increased insulation is an example of that. It’s simply dearer, but well worth the investment. Costs are mostly stable, some imported materials are also helping with this. Recent changes to compliance add a welcome change, Ivan says. “Now, our consents and independent inspections are from Building Consent Approvals Ltd (BCAL). BCAL works with established clients who also have appropriate civil liability, so all parties can have confidence in appropriate cover in case of issues. BCAL works collaboratively with us to ensure compliance,” he says. “This is one of the best changes in 46 years. Through efficiency, this will reduce costs and ensure compliance, also dramatically improve delays in consenting and inspections.” For Ivan, what sets his business apart is not just the houses Fowler Homes builds, but the relationships built along the way. Some are now returning with their children or returning family. They are again using Fowler Homes because of the trust established. Ivan personally manages each project alongside his team of trusted trades. “Our story is one of simplicity. No one will thank you if you make simple things complicated.
