CONTRACTING RJ Sam Brown (2014) T T Emma Bailey RJ Sam Brown (2014) Ltd is a small company with a big reputation for concrete cutting across the lower South Island, with owner Kevin Kilkelly bringing 25 years’ experience in the industry to the business. “I started my concrete cutting and drilling career for Sam Brown In Alexandra in June 2000,” says Kevin. “Prior to this, I did a building apprenticeship and worked for Breen Construction Company as a builder for 15 years. In 2014 another concrete cutter and I had the opportunity to buy Sam Brown Concrete Cutting out of the Central Otago side of the company, hence the new name of RJ Sam Brown (2014) Ltd. “My wife Gail and I bought out the business partners in 2020, just one month prior to the Covid lockdown.” The team now includes “step up son” Aaron Campbell as 2IC. “We carry out a wide variety of work, which includes cutting new slabs to minimise shrinking and cracking for new houses, industrial and commercial buildings. We also work in roading; cutting new roads, drilling core samples from roading infrastructure, cutting slabs and drilling holes for new services. “The demolition of existing old slabs of roading for removal is done with a heavier floor saw and blade combo.” The company works all over the lower South Island, Waitaki district, West Coast, but mainly in the Central Otago area – Queenstown, Wanaka Lakes district, Cromwell to Ranfurly to Beaumont and everywhere in between. “We have many relationships within the industry built on trust, quality and reliability,” Kevin says. “I feel these are very important qualities to have in a business, especially for the small businesses. “We have been involved in some very large projects over the years – ski field upgrades, O’Connell’s Pavilion makeover, new schools, irrigation reservoirs, the new Beaumont Bridge, Highlands Motor Sport Park and the Queenstown Bypass. “We strive to keep all our equipment updated with the latest tools and technology and keep plenty of spare items on hand. “We have a soffcut/early entry saw, which is used on new concrete immediately after the concrete placer has finished floating off. “This saw is different from other saws as the blade spins in reverse and a skid plate sits on the concrete with the blade between it to stop chipping, therefore no cracking later on. A lot of engineers are opting for this option these days.” The company also uses a wall saw for cutting of walls for demolition. It can cut out windows and doorways from precast concrete panels. “It can even do “upside down cutting”. This saw is used by remote control and has lots of precision. “We have numerous handheld saws both petrol and electric, as well as three-phase saws for inside use, eliminating fuel fumes. “These are also used for some of the smaller demolition jobs and are very handy for getting into smaller places or places where a trailer with a saw cannot access.” Kevin says this job also involves a lot of night work, cutting roads at night to avoid traffic hold-ups or floors in buildings that are occupied during the day.
