64 | ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN South Architects - Southern Builders Rosa Watson Awards recognise high-calibre designs The Merivale Alterations build was awarded a Highly Commended award in the Residential Alterations and Additions category at the ADNZ Architectural Design Awards. Christchurch-based South Architects are celebrating more success at the ADNZ Architectural Design Awards, receiving a Commended for a stunning build at Stonebridge Downs in Christchurch. The Tui Vale build was awarded a Commended for New Home over 300sqm at the ADNZ Architectural Design Awards. Judges commended the design for its “perfect mix of interior and exterior spaces for a growing family”. They said the large living space connected well to the surrounding landscape, while the enclosed courtyards allowed privacy. A standout feature of the family home is a sloping ceiling in the living room, which was part of the brief from the client to visually connect the home with the surrounding hills. It was constructed from LMA timber cladding (Australian hardwood) and concrete block, with feature windows into the living room, and a dining window. South Architects director Craig South says the owners were thrilled with the finished result. The awards follow previous success at the 2021 awards where the firm picked up the ADNZ Resene Multi-Unit Dwelling Architectural Design Award for the Peterborough Housing Co-operative and the ADNZ Resene Residential New Home over 300sqm Architectural Design Award for the Folded Roof Home. Craig says the recognition from the awards means a lot to the team, and helps promote the firm’s work. “A little bit of time in the spotlight is always good. It shows the ability of our firm to deliver this calibre of home and we appreciate the recognition.” He says highlights of the Tui Vale project were the expansive living area, spa courtyard off the main bedroom, and the ensuite skylight. “I enjoy the approach to the entry, past an existing tree, and beside the block wall.” A challenge was making the surrounding hills viewable from the living space, which was over the other bedrooms, he says. This was resolved by increasing the volume in the living and minimising the bulk/height of the rest of the home. Another challenge was bringing light into the ensuite, which was achieved by adding a skylight and being creative with the ceiling slopes. The builders were LOC Construction, which the firm works regularly with. “They are easy to work with and we knew they would be able to deliver an amazing project for our clients,” Craig says. The firm also picked up a Highly Commended award in the Residential Alterations and Additions category for its Merivale Alterations project that modernised a 1970s’ home in the suburb. The brief focused on improving spatial flow, comfort, and energy performance while retaining the home’s essential character. Southern Builders, the project’s lead contractor, carried out the reconfiguration and upgrades, introducing an open-plan layout to connect key connect key living areas, and the internal space was increased, particularly in communal spaces. A reconfigured roof form and newly proportioned square openings connected the home to the outdoors, creating framed views and natural ventilation. Skylights and new north-facing windows were installed to increase natural light throughout the home, along with upgraded insulation and double glazing. They also picked up a regional award in the Resene Colour in Design category for a renovation of their studio in the central city.
