The project exemplifies high-end residential design and construction, with the two companies delivering a complete turnkey package for overseas clients returning home to New Zealand. Eco Workshop’s Sarah Teasdale says the home represents the best of Dunedin design – thoughtful, efficient, and perfectly tailored to its site. “The clients came to us with their section in a recently completed subdivision, and we’ve worked closely with them and SB2 Build to create a home that balances functionality, form, and low-maintenance materials,” she says. The Reeves St section was developed into three terraced levels, and Eco Workshop’s design makes clever use of this topography. The garage sits at the base, built into the bank, giving the impression of a single-level home above. The main living areas flow across the second terrace, while landscaped steps and gardens occupy the upper level. The owners’ brief called for a five-bedroom, two-bathroom home with open-plan living, kitchen, and dining, plus a separate movie room. They wanted a blend of flat and sloping ceilings, solar power, and underfloor heating – “all the bells and whistles” of a premium, energy-efficient build. Originally planned to be clad in brick and cedar, the design evolved as Eco Workshop explored alternative materials that would deliver the same visual warmth, but with easier long-term maintenance. “Because of the size of the home – just over 300 square metres – we found that using full brick cladding made it look quite institutional,” Sarah says. “We’ve introduced a mix of forms and projections to break up the façade, and swapped cedar for a high-quality fibre-cement product that looks identical, but is much lower maintenance.” The home’s raw concrete-look garage anchors the structure visually, while bold projections and recessed bedroom forms create depth and texture. Despite its scale, the design retains a sense of warmth and intimacy, achieved through careful spatial planning and attention to light. SB2 Build was selected through a competitive tender process among Eco Workshop’s preferred builders.
