B&M Joinery T T Aimee Wilson JOINERY B&M Joinery in Cromwell knows how to build award-winning kitchens, and taking out the Master Joiners Regional Excellence Award for the second time was proof of that. The company’s entry into the awards was a high-spec kitchen featuring a curved island with a porcelain bench top and matching splashback framed with floating shelves and complete with integrated storage. Dezignatek swerve panels wrap around the curved island and rangehood, with shark-nose profiles integrated into the tall cabinetry and fridge panels, making for a smooth, seamless finish. B&M Joinery was established in 2016, and won the Otago-Southland Excellence Award in 2023, which recognised the company’s dedication to craftsmanship, innovation, and quality. Co-owner Kate Rule-Munro, who is also the business development & operations manager, says the project was a standout because it showcased what they do best: “Combining high-end design, precise craftsmanship, and practical functionality”. “It represented excellence across the board, from concept and detailing right through to installation. The team poured their heart into it, and the result reflects the passion and pride that drives everything we create.” Kate and husband Brendon, who has lived and breathed joinery since he was 16, run their business on solid systems and processes that keep everything running smoothly. “And we’re lucky to have an extended network of knowledge and support through both Mastercraft and Master Joiners, which we invest a lot of time and passion into,” says Kate. Brendon’s passion as a master joiner for the industry filters right through the company, which has evolved from a small family-run workshop to a highly capable and respected joinery business. The team has grown from three staff members to 14, but the biggest challenge facing the industry has always been the shortage of skilled workers. “We’ve missed a generation of joiners, and now it’s up to us to help inspire and attract today’s youth into the trade so they can become the future of New Zealand joinery,” Brendon says. The company is heavily involved in training apprentices, mentoring students, and supporting programmes that help young people experience the industry firsthand, which is something they are really passionate about. Using state-of-the-art equipment, including two CNC machines that allow them to handle large-scale cabinetry and intricate cuts with accuracy, B&M joiners construct every piece with precision and care. They also use an advanced edge bander to deliver a flawless finish on every panel. “This level of precision means every joinery piece is built not just to look beautiful, but to last,” says Brendon.
