Well-known for its high-end bespoke work, Wedgerwood Joinery is a producer of premium quality kitchens, cabinetry, and other machined joinery regardless of the budget. The Alexandra-based joinery manufacturer has been owned by Russell Mair and Hamish and Christine Sutherland since 2021, with Russell having previously been its general manager for three years. Russell and Wedgerwood’s multi-skilled staff have a huge depth of experience, specialising in complete house lots of joinery, from kitchens, wardrobes, bathrooms, stairs, wooden doors, windows and new furniture to repairs and all household joinery renovations. “We can manufacture every component in a house,” Russell says. “Our paramount strength is that we are an old-school joinery workshop in the sense that we can do it all; we can manufacture solid timber windows and doors, we can build stairs, craft high-end cabinetry and then blend it all together by bringing parts of the timber elements into the cabinetry.” Prior to the joint purchase, Wedgerwood Joinery had a presence in Queenstown and the wider Wakatipu Basin, but a key change was expanding into Wanaka through growth in reputation along with networking with industry contacts. “We’ve managed to get a lot more work in Wanaka as well as Queenstown.” One of the challenges Wedgerwood faces however, is most of its outstanding work cannot be photographed or promoted due to publicity-shy, high-end clients. “These clients have multi-million dollar dwellings with house lots of joinery, cabinetry and solid timber features manufactured and installed by Wedgerwood’s highly skilled team. “One house that we finished recently, we were on deck pretty much from day one; we built the solid timber windows and doors, we machined all the wall linings, all the ceiling and flooring, we did all the internal doors and door frames, everything was solid timber. “All the cabinetry was solid timber, not veneer.” Russell estimates Wedgerwood machined in excess of 200 cubic metres of American white oak for this one project. “That’s definitely Wedgerwood’s biggest strength; we can actually complete the whole project from start to finish.” Wedgerwood Joinery has been providing its craftsmanship as part of the restoration of Earnscleugh Castle near Alexandra. However, the details cannot be showcased until an already-scheduled television series episode is aired next year. This requires up-to-date computerised design and drawing capability to complement the latest cutting, shaping and moulding equipment. This mix of technology, and employees who are genuine craftsmen is a great asset to both the business and its clients, Russell says. “The biggest key to our business is our flexibility, and we do tackle some of the jobs that others don’t want to do because it is difficult and complex. “Our staff are our biggest testament to the success of Wedgerwood. We can put out some very impressive work.”
