T T Russell Fredric Starting out small early in 2023 with two projects ahead provided a springboard for King Construction to become established with minimal risk. As the business grew, owner Caleb King engaged a full-time contractor to help cope with the workload, and with still more work coming in, another contractor was taken on, but has since been replaced by a full-time foreman. “It’s been a lot to manage, but I managed to find my feet,” says Caleb. “Not having paid employees eliminated the risk for both parties. It was a good foot in the door. It takes the liability out of it. “I have a passion for all things building and love a challenge, which is why I have decided to venture out on my own.” King Construction operates out of Timaru with a positive, can-do attitude and the expertise to undertake a variety of residential, rural and commercial work, including bespoke builds, renovations and additions, reroofing, sheds, and decks. The business was recently engaged to provide ongoing maintenance at a large local industrial site. A striking completed project is a rustic macrocarpa deck with a corrugated iron-clad rafter roof, added to a family friend’s red brick bungalow. Rather than being a straightforward job, the client wanted the rafters cut into the top centre of the heavy 300mm x 300mm posts, along with angled vertical windscreens which, in addition to being an attractive design element, serves a practical function providing privacy and ventilation. The project included cutting out part of the lounge wall that leads to the deck and inserting a ranchslider. The idea for the deck was to have a better indoor-outdoor flow deck, so the client could have a nice outdoor area for family and friends to gather and enjoy,” Caleb says. The client was thrilled and the result is impressive, with the space being transformed in just three weeks. “It’s exactly how he was envisioning it to be. It was a very rewarding job, the finished product speaks for itself.” Highlighting Caleb’s penchant for a challenge, a completely different job involved rebuilding a large, relocated steel portal farm shed that had been abandoned by another builder due to problems that included mismatched documentation. “We had the joy of putting the puzzle back together. I turned up on-site to look at the job and all the steel portals, gurts and purlins were sitting in a pile. “Some were twisted and bent, which we had to replace, but that was all part of the challenge trying to figure out where it all went” While there were some significant challenges, including with the documentation and additional parts having to be ordered, the result is a highly functional, spacious shed that was built a metre higher to allow tractor entry through the door. King Construction recently completed a bedroom extension to an eight-year-old house, with the job coming through a referral from a satisfied client. “He was wanting a good, reliable builder to undertake the job, and we got put forward to it. We won the job. “He was pricing it against a competitor and we won the bid. We worked very closely with the clients on their design and how they wanted things.” The King Construction team is currently working on a new-house build. “If you focus on the smaller tasks, the bigger ones do come, and they have come, and that’s just off the word-of-mouth recommendations from networking with people I know and clients that I’ve done work for and they’re very happy with the outcome.” Proud to work with King Construction Manufacturers and suppliers of: • Long Run Roofing • Flashings • Steel Purlins • Fascia • Spouting • Downpipes timaru@freemanroofing.co.nz 154 Meadows Rd, Washdyke, Timaru Ph: 03 688 7224 Painting Fixing Plastering Suspended Ceilings ProudlysupportingKingConstruction 022 472 6212 southcanterburyinteriors@gmail.com
