BUILDING Mid Canterbury fourth-generation family construction firm, McIntosh Group, has again proven why it is synonymous with building excellence, taking out three top honours at the 2025 Master Builders House of the Year Awards. The group has won a Master Builders House of the Year regional category and a Gold Award for the stunning renovation of a West Melton home in the over $2 million category. This was together with two additional Gold Awards and Top 100 placements for the Lake Hood Lakeside Retreat and owners’ own build home on Walnut Avenue, which has a taste of Japan in Ashburton. Both are now heading to the national finals. “It’s a huge honour for our team,” says Rod Smith, general manager and co-owner of McIntosh Residential, alongside John McIntosh. The McIntosh group of companies includes a commercial, precast concrete and painting division. “These awards recognise the depth of skill and care our team of 50-plus people bring to every project, from high-end architectural homes to smaller renovations,” says Rod. “We’ve been building in this region for more than 70 years, and that legacy still drives us every day to deliver our best on every project.” The award-winning West Melton renovation, designed by Chilton and Mayne Architects, transformed a tired two-storey brick house into a high-end weatherboard villa of rare sophistication. With its eight-car garage, four bedrooms, three bathrooms, home office and a den, the home blends traditional charm with modern comfort and style. Vaulted ceilings, an outdoor pool complex and manicured formal gardens add to the architectural statement of balance and refinement. The ‘taste of Japan’ home takes a very different approach, inspired by Zen philosophy and Japanese aesthetics. Wrapped in aluminium Metwood battens and extensive cedar tongue-and-groove ceilings and soffits, the 527sqm home opens around a tranquil internal courtyard. This four-bedroom two-bathroom home offers a separate lounge, home office and internal lift access. The kitchen features concealed scullery, a curved kitchen island and copper rangehood. “There’s an immense amount of hidden detail in this home,” says Rod. “Every joint, every finish was considered. A fully integrated construction group, the McIntosh family has been building in Mid Canterbury since the 1950s, when owner and founder Alastair McIntosh worked alongside his father, Colin.
