82 | The firm provides core services in architectural and timber joinery, as well as a wide range of fitouts: commercial, education and school, hospitality and health services JB Joinery JOINERY Three decades of excellence T T Rosa Watson For 30 years, Christchurch-based JB Joinery has been providing joinery services around the region, and that looks set to continue well into the future. The firm provides core services in architectural and timber joinery, as well as a wide range of fitouts: commercial, education and school, hospitality and health services. With 60 staff on board, it specialises in a wide variety of joinery across the board, from small to large scale projects. “We work hard to keep our client base happy,” assistant manager Philip O’Brien says. Current projects underway are the BUPA Parkstone care home, and Banbury Lodge and Holy Lea retirement villages. Also underway are works at Ellesmere College, Rolleston College and Twizel Area School, as well as Christchurch Hospital’s Tower 3, Otago School of Medicine in Christchurch and the West Coast Mental Health Facility in Greatymouth. The firm has also been involved with a number of public and entertainment facilities such as The Court Theatre in Christchurch, Full Monty’s in Rolleston and Greymouth’s new public library, to name a few. JB Joinery works with a wide range of products from manufacturers like Prime Panels, Laminex Group, Plymasters and Plytech, Blum, FIT, and Hettich. It also has a range of sub-contractors for stainless-steel, metalwork, stone, and acrylic work. “Highlights are always seeing the end result,” Philip says. “Seeing the months of preparation and organisation in the background come to life.” With early engagement on projects, he says the challenge is always bringing the concept to a point where it can be manufactured, working through the process with the site management team and architect. “Getting the finer details nailed down so the project can progress is challenging but rewarding.” JB Joinery was founded in the early 1990s by John Begbie and continues to operate from its original Christchurch premises. Over the past 30 years, it has grown from a traditional joinery workshop into a trusted provider of complete commercial fit-out solutions across the South Island. The leadership team brings more than three decades of experience in commercial and residential joinery, supporting a consistent track record of successful delivery. “I think diversity and adapting to market requirement has played a big part in our success,” Philip reflects. The firm also covers all joinery requirements in house such as timber work and lacquer finishing along with everyday needs, he says. “This helps set us apart and also helps us control timeframes without being at the mercy of other trades to ensure we meet deadlines and programme targets.” The firm currently runs three CNC (computer numerical control) machines that help the team keep up with demand. It also has a large volume edge bander which is due to be replaced early in the new year with a Hyfuse machine. “(This) will help us be more efficient and productive,” Philip says. “Investment is something we feel is key to longevity. The market is always evolving when it comes to manufacturing machinery, so investment in the latest machinery helps us to be competitive by importing productivity, which makes us more efficient in the tendering market.” Looking forward, Philips says it’s important for the firm to stick to its core values and continue to grow its skillset.
