His company, From The Ground Up Construction, employs a small team, who are passionate about what they do. “We only do jobs on charge and materials. We have a complete open-book policy and don’t mess around. “The boys are always allowed to speak up and use their own experience to drive us forward with the best and most efficient method,” Bruce explains. “Often, clients think that a fixed price is their best option, failing to realise the risk written into the contract. “We work towards more accurate estimates that allow freedom of change and give an honest price for the job ahead.” Building is in Bruce’s blood. Both clients come from a super fast-paced technology background, possessing an amazing accurate eye for detail and great taste.” He says Bryce from Threefold “knocked the concept out of the park”, and the project came together perfectly. Using classic Central Otago materials, such as schist and cedar, he then incorporated a 2.9m stud height and sharp modern lines using Alucobond fascia, and Flashclad aluminium vertical large tray cladding. “The house required us to knock the whole top storey off on a steep hill and rebuild, with close conversations and detailing from engineers and architects to get everything to fit with the original bottom storey. “This, coupled with high studs, flat roof pitches, multiple long-run internal gutters, floor-to-ceiling joinery, and hidden doors gave the boys a great challenge to flex their carpentry skills and get things millimetre perfect.” Bruce is happy to say that most of his clients have remained very good friends, and he often enjoys a cup of tea or a glass of wine with them afterwards. “We look forward to keep on doing what we’re doing in the beautiful town of Wanaka, and having fun with it whilst we’re at it,” he says. The building industry does have its challenges, though, with massive outlay to get things certified, he says. “We have materials across the ditch at a 10th of the price with Australian standards, but they aren’t easily transferred to New Zealand standards. “The Government isn’t doing enough to open more products to the market and get more competition flowing.”
