Oamaru-based Hastie Construction and Canterbury-based Heartland Homes are meeting growing demand from buyers looking beyond traditional builds, by offering transportable homes as an alternative. Like many good ideas, the partnership came about through conversation. Hastie Construction owner Hayden Hastie says he was approached by a client, who was in talks with Heartland Homes ahead of their build. The client was keen on Hastie Construction completing the build while using one of Heartland Homes’ designs. Further talks took place between Hayden and Heartland Homes owners, Geoff and Vicki Foster, resulting in a thriving partnership that not only benefits the businesses, but also the communities they serve. Their working relationship is underpinned by shared values and a focus on outcomes. Hastie Construction has built a reputation for versatility across the construction sector, building more than just homes. “We specialise in all aspects of construction and building – sheds, houses, renovations, fences,” Hayden says. “We have a wide skill set across our team.” It is that diverse capability that is now being used as part of a collaborative approach with Hearthland Homes. Transportable homes, while not a new concept, are gaining renewed traction as buyers look for smarter and more costeffective solutions. That efficiency is a major drawcard, particularly as economic pressures continue to shape buyer behaviour. Within the partnership, each business plays to its strengths. “Both parties are driven to provide the best outcome for the client,” Hayden says. Hastie Construction takes the lead on the build itself, managing the project from start to finish. “We build the house from the ground up, help land them on-site and get them to final hand- over stage for the clients. Also, we build any decks at the client’s request.” One of the misconceptions around transportable homes is that they require compromise on design or comfort. However, Hayden says that is not the case. He says they can be compact in size without losing out on luxuries like a butler’s pantry, ensuites and open-plan living. Flexibility remains a key feature, too, with design options largely dictated by transport requirements. “Anything is possible as long as it fits within the truck’s parameters for trucking onto site,” says Hayden. Affordability is a key factor in the appeal of transportable homes. He says smaller footprints and reduced travel and accommodation costs play a significant role in keeping builds within reach financially. Interest among clients is coming from a wide cross-section of the market, including first- home buyers and those looking to downsize. Looking ahead, the partnership will continue to meet ongoing demand, as more people turn to practical and affordable housing solutions. “[It’s looking] very positive with future builds in the pipeline,” says Hayden.
