The company, with strong South Island roots, manufactures out of Timaru, along with having another factory in Silverdale, Auckland, where their office is based. From these sites, buildings are delivered freight-free nationwide, with a large number heading to customers throughout the South Island. Outpost Buildings is proudly owned and operated by the Smith family. Alex and Lisa Smith manage the business with the help of Lisa’s stepfather, Greg Cox, as sales manager alongside team members, Corey and Andrea. We have put together a few videos, too, for people to look at before they get started,” Lisa says. The kitsets are designed for differing levels of DIY ability. “The chicken coop can be a one-day or weekend project for someone with basic DIY skills. As we get into the bigger projects you might want a friend or handyman to come and help out. For the large horse stables and cabins we recommend getting a builder to put it together,” she says. The chicken coops are one of the more popular kitsets. As they are skid-mounted they can be easily moved around the property. “The fact you can move it around makes it popular, you can move it on to fresh pasture, and the chicken droppings are then fertilising the ground you have moved it from.” The livestock shelters are another strong seller, again because they are designed to be moved about, as well as for their versatility on farm. As per the company’s slogan they are “Built Tough”. “After the cyclones, I got messages from customers saying the structure had survived. It may have moved a bit, but they just put it back in place and it was good to go,” says Lisa. ”People also like that they are New Zealand-made, and we have a strong focus on customer service.” Being a kitset the hard work is also done for you, she says, and there is no wastage because all the parts are cut and ready to go.
