The company is a one-stop-shop that can provide OEM (original equipment manufacturing) and ODM (original design manufacturing) services, producing powderformed Oral Nutritional Supplement food for all demographics. Registered under New Zealand’s MPI (Ministry for Primary Industries) and China’s GACC (General Administration of Customs China), it manufactures a range of products, such as formula products, nutritional supplements, whole and skim milk powder, and food for special purposes. Products can be packed in cans or bags in various sizes to meet the requirements of the client, and there is a 6500m2 purpose-built warehouse for storing raw materials and finished goods. This includes two built-in fully covered loadout bays for the receival and dispatch of goods. In 2022, new bagging lines were installed, increasing production on the existing canning line that could do five mt per day on an eighthour shift, doubling capacity. Today, the facility can produce 10 metric tonne per day of its 1kg products in a single eight-hour shift with two machines running. General Manager Graham Veale says being based in Ashburton means the company is the most southern canning and bagging facility in the South Island. “We have immediate ingredient supply access from Fonterra, Westland, Synlait, OCD, ODL and MVM within the region. We are on the route of State Highway 1, which allows us easy access to both Timaru and Lyttelton ports, and we are 800m from the new roadrail hub in Ashburton.” NZDCL can pack a multitude of different powders which include bovine (cow), caprine (goat), and ovine (sheep) powder. There are currently 15 “exceptionally talented people” employed at the company who bring different skill sets that include quality assurance and procurement right through to the packing specialists on the canning and bagging lines, Graham says. “(This) allows us to maintain the highest standards possible throughout the entire process for our customers so that they can be sure their product is fit for purpose and meets all regulatory requirements. NZDCL was incorporated in 2014 with the construction of the manufacturing facility completed in 2017. The canning and blending line equipment was installed and completed in 2019 and its Risk Management Programme (RMP) was approved by MPI the same year. The company has maintained a Performance Based Verification Step 5, which is the highest step level attainable under the MPI New Zealand Animal Products Notice, and in 2020 it was granted General Administration of Customs China (GACC China) listing that allows it to export products to China. It also holds organic and Halal certifications. NZDCL is an approved transitional facility with MPI Certified Approved Persons employed on site, which allows it to receive containers directly from port that have come from overseas and then devan them onsite while maintaining strict biosecurity throughout. In 2022, the company expanded its production capabilities with the installation of a bagging line that gave it the ability to pack 400g to 1kg into ziplock, pillow and gusset bags, as well as a sachet line that can pack from 1g to 40g. NZDCL is majority-owned by Patterson Capital Limited who hold more than 90 per cent of available shares. The board recently approved the purchase of a new blender and holding tank for the bagging lines, which are currently being manufactured and will be in place by the end of May 2026. This will provide the flexibility to extend the product range by offering blended products from every packing machine on site to customers.
