This approach extends across both residential projects and commercial work, where return on investment, durability and adaptability are just as important as aesthetics. Aaron says Urbanfunction’s philosophy is rooted in designing for longevity, rather than trends. “The most sustainable building is the one you don’t need to redesign or renovate every decade,” he says. “Longevity isn’t a trend. It’s a financial and environmental strategy. Good architecture should work hard, age well, and still feel relevant long after trends have passed.” Bringing 25 years of experience across Aotearoa, Australia, and the UK, Aaron has developed a reputation for high-end residential and commercial architecture, urban design, and complex technical detailing. Urbanfunction’s work spans bespoke homes, renovations, multi-unit developments, heritage restorations, and commercial projects across the South Island, including Christchurch, Queenstown, Wanaka, and Nelson. Made in New Zealand from upcycled parachutes, these reusable bags are incredibly strong, lightweight, and compact – about the size of a small mobile phone. The idea began in London in 2008, when Aaron, frustrated by the city’s plastic pollution, sought the perfect long-life, pocket-sized bag. A chance conversation with a friend in France about skydiving inspired him to repurpose out-ofservice parachutes, combining durability with sustainability. “Zerobag reflects the same principles we apply at Urbanfunction – functional, enduring, and designed to last,” Aaron says. Urbanfunction’s residential portfolio is particularly strong in hillside and complex sites, delivering homes that balance site context with the way people live. For commercial clients, Urbanfunction focuses on functionality, buildability, and longterm adaptability, ensuring projects support operations and occupants alike. Renovation and heritage work forms another key strand, where the studio enhances performance and usability while respecting original fabric and heritage values.
