ARCHITECTURE Warnock Architecture Warnock Architecture is marking 25 years in business, reflecting on steady growth and a diverse portfolio, with state-of-the-art homes a significant feature. Based in Outram, the company was established by Reece Warnock to provide practical, well-considered, architecturally designed homes that were both creative and buildable. That philosophy remains firmly in place today, resulting in a business that has grown from a small local operation into a respected design studio that delivers projects across Otago and beyond. Since its establishment, Warnock Architecture has completed a range of projects across residential, commercial and rural landscapes, with the 25th anniversary a milestone that reflects its passion for the industry. Reece says that level of output is built on trust and repeat relationships. “We have now completed more than 2000 projects, which reflects not only longevity, but also the trust of our clients, repeat work, and strong relationships with builders, consultants, and communities throughout the region.” That collaborative approach is at the heart of the business. Reece says Warnock Architecture relies heavily on everyone involved being on the same page to ensure great outcomes. “Good outcomes rely on strong communication between clients, builders, engineers, planners, and other specialists,” he says. “We see our role as helping bring all of those parts together in a way that keeps the project clear, efficient, and well resolved.” Whenever possible, Warnock Architecture works with local tradespeople, including DS Shaw Builders, who have been involved in a number of their projects. A key point of difference for the studio has been its ongoing adoption of advanced technology, which has ultimately transformed how clients engage with their projects. “We use 3D design and visualisation extensively, which helps clients understand their projects much more clearly than they can from plans alone,” Reece says. “It gives them confidence in the design and helps identify opportunities or issues earlier in the process. Virtual reality takes that a step further by allowing clients to walk through their building before it is constructed.” Reece says it can help clients at the planning stage, particularly when they are trying to understand or visualise scale, space, light, and how rooms will connect. The technology now available not only enhances the client experience, but also helps identify opportunities and resolve potential issues early in the design process, saving time and money. Design work across Otago requires specific considerations, including exposed environments and strong climate responses, heritage influences and rural landscapes. Every project is shaped by its surroundings and outlook, Reece says “Each site has its own character, and we enjoy finding design responses that suit both the location and the client.” The industry has evolved significantly over the past 25 years, particularly with the availability of digital tools and increased expectations around energy efficiency, building performance and compliance. Clients are also much more engaged in the design journey, a shift Reece notes as a positive. One thing that has always remained the same for Warnock Architecture is its passion for bringing people’s ideas to life. “What I enjoy most is helping people take an idea, sometimes just a rough vision at first, and turning it into something real,” Reece says. As Warnock Architecture looks to the future, its focus remains on growth, embracing innovation and delivering high-quality design, all while building strong client relationships.
