A message from our CHAIR Michael Chan Foung Talofa Lava and Warm Greetings to our Strategic Partners, Funders, Sponsors, Supporters, and the networks we work alongside. Neighbourhood Support Waitākere has continued to run smoothly throughout 2025, with Sharon and Sarah managing daily operations, strengthening relationships with local organisations, and working closely with community partners. We acknowledge and thank the Police staff at Henderson Station, West CPNZ groups, and Community Policing Teams for their ongoing support of NS Waitākere, the Safer Plates programme, and the many events we deliver together. Ongoing sponsorship from West City Autos Group, Mitre 10 Mega Westgate & Henderson, and Stanley Black & Decker has enabled us to supply new drill skins, supporting our efforts to reduce number plate theft. Henderson Heroes 2025 was a great success, with its move to a Saturday in February increasing attendance and providing a valuable opportunity to showcase our local Emergency Responders and Community Service Heroes. Recent weather-related events have reinforced the importance of Neighbourhood Support in helping streets stay connected and resilient, aligning with our message: REACH OUT – LOOK OUT – HELP OUT. We encourage everyone to continue building strong connections within their neighbourhoods. “A socially connected street is a resilient street.” Finally, thank you to all who support our commitment to creating safer, more connected, and resilient communities. Stay Well, Ia Manuia Michael Chan Foung – NS Waitākere Chairperson 7 Page

Online and Identity Safety The internet is an important source of information and means of social interaction for children, young people and adults alike. It pays to keep in mind that it can also present dangers, including online fraud, scams, bullying and abuse. Tips Social Media Read through privacy options carefully and make sure you fully understand your rights, and what happens to your data. This goes for app updates as well. Set your profile to private and only invite or accept friend requests from people you already know. Don’t post your address, phone number, or other personal information online. Scams and good online safety advice Visit Netsafe New Zealand at: https://netsafe.org.nz/scams Online Trading There are risks when trading on all online platforms. Trust your instincts: if the deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. Child Safety • • Know who your child is making contact with online. If they are not your child’s actual friends, question their online friendship. • • Talk to your child about the dangers of posting personal information online. • • If you or your child become suspicious about a person online, stop contact immediately. • • Do not allow your child to use the computer in private areas of your home. • • Know which social networking sites your child is on and what information they are posting. Message From Auckland Emergency Management West Auckland’s bush, coast, and urban communities make it a special place to live, but this can bring challenges during severe weather and other emergencies. Daily life can be disrupted and communities can quickly become isolated. That’s why being prepared matters. Start with three simple steps: know your local hazards, make a household plan, and keep emergency supplies. Understand your local hazards Some of the hazards West Auckland faces include flooding, storms, landslides, coastal inundation, tsunami, wildfire, drought, and prolonged power outages. Low-lying areas are more at risk of flooding, while hill and coastal communities may face slips, erosion, road closures, and isolation. If you live, work, or spend time near the coast, harbour, West Auckland – it’s time to talk emergencies 11 Page

estuary, or river, you may also be in a tsunami evacuation zone. Check your local Emergency Readiness and Response Plan or visit Auckland Emergency Management (AEM) to understand the risks in your area. https:// www.aucklandemergencymanagement. govt.nz/your-local/local-board-plans/ Make a household plan A household plan helps your whānau know what to do in an emergency. It should include key contacts, where supplies are kept, what to do if services are disrupted, and where to go if you need to evacuate. https://www. aucklandemergencymanagement.govt.nz/ get-prepared/get-home-ready/make-aplan/ Talk together about: • • What emergencies could happen • • How you will stay safe • • Where you will go if you can’t get home • • How you will communicate if phones or internet aren’t working Include children, older people, people with disabilities, and pets. Visit AEM to create or download your plan. Keep emergency supplies Keep enough supplies at home for at least three days. Most items are things you already have, just keep them together in one easy-to-access place. Don’t forget your pets. https://www. aucklandemergencymanagement.govt.nz/ get-prepared/get-home-ready/emergencysupplies/Your supplies should include: , ,Water , ,Long-lasting food , ,Radio and torches , ,Power bank , ,First aid kit , ,Medications , ,Toilet paper and sanitation supplies , ,Cooking supplies , ,Gloves and basic safety gear It’s time to talk emergencies: check your supplies, make a plan, and make sure everyone knows what to do. 12 Page

Message From Fire and Emergency NZ Smoke alarms are one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your home and whānau from fire. But did you know that interconnected smoke alarms offer an even higher level of safety, especially in New Zealand homes? Interconnected smoke alarms are linked alarms, so when one alarm detects smoke, they all sound at the same time. This is crucial because fires don’t always start where people are. A fire in the garage or downstairs living area can take precious minutes to be noticed in bedrooms, particularly at night. Interconnection gives everyone in the home an early warning, no matter where the fire begins. This matters in New Zealand, where many homes are multi-level. They’re especially important for families, older people, and renters who may not have full control over building design. These alarms can be wireless, making them easy for the homeowner to install without complicated wiring. Fire and Emergency recommend smoke alarms in every bedroom, hallway, and living area, and even more strongly recommend interconnection. It’s a small upgrade, that can make a life-saving difference. You can purchase interconnected smoke alarms from your local hardware store. Installing interconnected smoke alarms isn’t just about meeting building standards, it’s about peace of mind. When every second counts, hearing the alarm early can save lives. 13 Page

Safer Plates & Free Tool Engraving Events Neighbourhood Support Waitākere, alongside our Community Policing Teams, has proudly delivered the Safer Plates and Free Tool Engraving programme since 2012. We also work closely with our local Community Patrol New Zealand teams to support these events. We are incredibly grateful to the businesses and venues that host our events — your ongoing support makes this programme possible. Since launching, we have upgraded number plate screws on over 8,850 vehicles, helping to reduce theft and improve community safety. We would like to acknowledge and thank our valued sponsors: West City Auto Group, Mitre 10 MEGA Westgate & Henderson, and Stanley Black & Decker. Upcoming events are regularly shared on the Neighbourhood Support Waitākere Facebook page, the North Shore, Rodney & West Auckland Police Facebook page, and on our website: https://www. nswaitakere.org.nz/events For a small cost of $4 (covering $1 per stainless steel screw), you can have your standard screws replaced with safer, anti-theft screws. This service is free for SuperGold Card holders, and also free for new members joining the Neighbourhood Support Waitākere network at the event. We also offer free tool engraving for tradies and residents — simply bring along your tools to help protect them from theft and assist with recovery. NS Waitākere—Henderson Heroes 2026 Henderson Heroes 2026 (WC246) Another amazing day for HH26—marking our 5th Henderson Heroes event! Once again, we were proud to host over 30 local Emergency Responders and Community Service Heroes. With incredible support from our community, attendance exceeded 1,000 people on the day. Preparing For Emergencies Here In The Whau “Communities that prepare for emergencies recover faster” Since Cyclone Gabrielle, we have seen an increase in the frequency of severe weather events affecting our communities. Since April, the country has had 133 days of declared states of emergency – that’s pretty much every day of this year. While declared states of emergencies are a useful tool for central authorities to organise funding, personnel, and resources to help in the response phase, there can be confusion about what this means for people on the ground. The Whau Community Emergency Readiness Network (WCERN) hopes to bridge the gap between central authority and communities during emergencies. We are a network of community hubs, non-profit organisations, cultural groups, and businesses serious about ensuring the Whau is ready for the next ‘big event’. This year, we have had many community leaders take time out of their busy lives to undergo first aid, psychological first aid, and Community Emergency Hub training to ensure the Whau is better prepared. Once activated, these Community Emergency Hubs will become a welcoming space for the community to gather, stay informed, request services, and offer a helping hand. By creating space for communities to respond to emergencies, WCERN seeks to empower communities and ease the transition into recovery. Of course, none of our mahi means anything without connected streets. At its core, emergency preparedness starts from the individual and works upwards. Making household emergency plans means your household is ready. Getting to know your neighbours and sharing resources builds resilient streets. Our Community Emergency Hubs build on local resilience and incorporate the community into the broader response from Auckland Emergency Management. If emergency readiness is something you are keen to get involved in, find out more on our Facebook page: Whau Community Emergency Readiness Network, or contact Mika at Mika@WhauResilience.org.nz 19 Page

Neighbourhood Support Connects Across the Globe What started in 2023 as a concerned family member in the United Kingdom reaching out to Neighbourhood Support Waitākere for help and guidance for a loved one in New Zealand became something much more than anyone could have expected. Initially, they were seeking information about local supports and services for a family member who required assistance. What followed was more than six months of regular weekly email updates, as we helped connect them with the right people, services, and authorities. During that time, we received wonderful feedback about not only our knowledge and ability to connect them with appropriate support, but also the kindness, understanding, and willingness of those involved to help. As the months passed, those emails became more than updates. A genuine friendship developed. Now, three years later, we are still email pals who check in with each other almost every day. The 12–13 hour time difference between New Zealand and the United Kingdom has never been a barrier. When one of us is starting the day, the other is heading into the evening. While New Zealand is in the middle of winter, I receive beautiful photos of the UK summer—flowers, gardens, sunshine, and local scenery. In return, I share images of New Zealand's summer and life on this side of the world. We exchange recipes, advice, stories, and encouragement. Sometimes the emails are long and detailed; other times they are simply a few lines to check in and say hello. What began as a request for support became a long-distance friendship spanning the globe. What started with a "Reaching Out" request for support became a "Helping Out" connection across the miles, and ultimately, we ended up "Looking Out" for each other. It is a wonderful reminder that Neighbourhood Support is about more than connecting people with services. It is about connecting people with people. Sometimes, the most meaningful connections are the ones we never expect. 20 Page
