At the centre of the latest launches for beef farmers is the Cattle Handler Hydraulic Auto Drafting System. While auto drafting itself is not new, integrating electronic identification (EID) and weighing into one seamless flow represents a significant operational step forward, says Harmen Heesen, Managing Director of TechniPharm. Cows are identified, weighed and automatically sorted in a single smooth sequence, reducing time spent in the yards and removing reliance on human reaction speed. A simplified in-shed three way drafting system for dairy farmers works on the similar principles and offers a remote controlled option also. “Farmers don’t need more complexity, they need systems that quietly do the job every day,” says Harmen. “When you can identify, weigh and draft in one controlled movement, you remove stress from both the animal and the operator.” For larger dairy operations managing frequent stock movements, the system turns herd data into immediate action. “Drafting becomes consistent and repeatable, helping farmers act on performance information without slowing down workflow,” says Harmen. Infrastructure protection is also under the spotlight with the Bayscreen clip-on windbreak. Designed to attach directly to existing bay structures, it provides instant shelter in yards, calf sheds and implement bays without requiring permanent alterations. “Sometimes the smartest innovation is simply fixing something farmers have tolerated for years,” explains Harmen. “Exposure to wind and driving rain increases animal stress and makes routine jobs harder than necessary. If people and animals are protected from the elements, everything runs better.” He says perhaps the most forward-looking release is the Collar Care Hydraulic Headbail and Neck Extender system, developed in response to the rapid uptake of livestock wearables such as Halter and Shepherd. “Traditional headbails were never designed for collar fitting or adjustment, leaving farmers to manage the task in less controlled environments,” explains Harmen. “The new system gently extends the cow’s neck using hydraulic control, creating a stable, accessible work zone for collar or tag application. It often enables a one-person operation while reducing noise, resistance and physical strain. This innovation is about recognising that animal management is now both physical and digital. Our infrastructure has to support that shift safely. We’ve engineered the system specifically for dairy and beef animals, with controlled restraint that avoids shock-force and reduces risk.” The system can also be used for NAIT tagging and replacing EID devices, a practical advantage given the penalties associated with non-compliance at processing, he says. These launches build on a company history spanning more than 30 years. TechniPharm designs and manufactures animal handling, yard automation and effluent management systems from its New Zealand base.
