Owner/operator Liam Crowley and the team provide a full range of earthworks and site-preparation services across the district, focusing on practical solutions for clients. The recent addition of a 1.6km section of the Shotover Gorge Trail from Hugo’s tunnel at Arthurs Point involved installation of stormwater and subsoil drainage, vegetation clearing and track formation. “We work with trail trusts, councils, and community groups to build tracks that respect the landscape and stand up to use and weather,” says Liam. Soon, they will start on a 5km stretch of the Kawarau Gorge trail – grading the surface with gravel and compacting to complete the project before it opens to the public. OnSight Earthworks left its mark on the award-winning Ayrburn food and wine destination near Arrowtown by providing civil and landscaping aspects of the Flower Farm extension, Billy’s and The Bakehouse. That included hardwood sleeper retaining walls, gravel paths, foundation/footing preparation and civil works. Commercial projects include wastewater and stormwater trenching and installation, footing and yard slab preparation, kerbing, asphalt remediation and landscape planting for the expansion of Cromwell New World. Liam says OnSight Earthworks’ mission is to deliver high-quality construction and earthmoving services that strengthen the community, while keeping intervention in nature to a minimum. OnSight Earthworks provides a full range of earthworks and site-preparation services across the Central Otago district. Originally from Timaru, Liam first came into Central Otago to start on the Lake Dunstan Cycle Trail as a contract operator, and five years ago decided to start his own business – initially investing in a 5.5t excavator, then adding a small truck, additional excavators and attachments, wheeled and tracked loaders, compaction equipment and a larger truck to the fleet. Current projects the team is working on include cycle trail construction, cart-paths and associated drainage works at the new Parkins Bay golf course development in Glendhu Bay. Soon, they will be doing more of the same for the new Hogan’s Gully golf course near Arrowtown. Alongside this work, there are some exciting new civil projects coming up in Cromwell, as well as a major development of a local hot tub and motorhome facility in Hawea flat. “The nature of civil and foundational earthworks means a lot of our work is hidden, but completed landscaping and cycle trail projects are great examples of a more finished product,” says Liam.
